Two member seat

[edit]

I wonder if the article could be clearer that this was to fill one vacancy in a two-member seat. For instance the statement "Morel had held the seat since the 1922 general election, when he had famously defeated Winston Churchill", is misleading. In 1922 Edwin Scrymgeour (who actually was well ahead of Morel in vote terms in 1922), topped the poll and was also elected, and continued to be MP until 1931. In fact some results for 1922 report the election as 1 Labour hold and 1 Prohibitionist gain from Liberal, giving the idea that Morel simply succeed the previous Labour MP Alexander Wilkie. This is also problematic however as While Wilkie had been elected with Churchill in 1918 (and both 1910 elections), Morel and Wilkie were on opposite wings of the Labour Party and Wilkie had enjoyed tacit Liberal support in 1910 and 1918 (and in 1918 was also supported by the local Conservatives), while Morel was actively opposed by Liberals in 1922. Nonetheless I think it would be better to make clear this election was for an MP to serve alongside Scymgeour and amend the reference to the 1922 election to something like "Morel had held the seat since the 1922 general election, when he and Edwin Scrymgeour famously defeated Winston Churchill".
