– From 1948 to 1963 this was known as Federation of Malaya. Per Category:1948 by country (and other year by country categories) the name used should be the country name. This is also consistent with the usage in Template:Years in Malaysia. Gonnym (talk) 11:01, 3 August 2021 (UTC) — Relisting. ASUKITE 15:54, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
- In 1963 until September it was known as Federation of Malaya, so another option can be to split that year. --Gonnym (talk) 21:11, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment No objection if using formal state names is preferable, but worth noting that Malaya was the common name for the country at the time, and remains the common name when referring to that period today. CMD (talk) 09:57, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose per nom (sic), i.e. consistency. The current titles are consistent with other articles in the category, using the short form rather than the official name of the country. (This situation differs from the earlier [1890s–1946] Federated Malay States juxtaposed with the Unfederated Malay States, but these years use the format YYYY in British Malaya to include both.) — AjaxSmack 19:44, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose essentally per WP:COMMONNAME. My passport says I am from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I am as a resident of the Republic of Hungary also allowed to be a Citizen of the European Union, as well as being a British subject. I've lived as a permanent resident of the Federation of the United States in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the State of Texas with my then-partner from the Province of Ontario. Taking Occam's Razor I see no good in elongating this. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 20:07, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment. "Federation of the United States" is red as I write this, but I've seen it before that it goes blue during discussion. We don't need it, despite having "Federal law" etc in many an article: context disambiguates. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 20:27, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment: To the above arguing WP:COMMONNAME, the problem with that argument is that Malaya is a disambiguation page and does not in fact lead to Federation of Malaya. Additionally, using the argument of consistency with Category:1948 by country above, Category:1948 in Malaya is in fact a child of Category:Federation of Malaya and is not in Category:Malaya, as is Category:1948 in the United Kingdom a child of Category:United Kingdom and is not in Category:United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, nor does United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland exist as a stand-alone article, while Federation of Malaya does. --Gonnym (talk) 10:20, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
- There is sometimes a need for disambiguation when referring to the term with no context, however these categories inherently have years, which provide the necessary disambiguating context. CMD (talk) 10:28, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose Per WP:COMMONNAME we shall use Malaya name, unless at that particular of time there are other country called (let's say) Republic of Malaya, then only we shall use Federation of Malaya for the former to avoid ambiguity. Chongkian (talk) 06:17, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
