Notability of mid-October storm complex

[edit]

@Elijahandskip and 170.24.150.113: The recent system that brought snow mainly to the upper peninsula of Michigan is not notable enough for inclusion in this article. Similar events occur quite frequently in this region and are generally low-impact, including this one. We generally do not include low-impact systems in winter articles, to prevent them from being bloated with too many events. Occasionally, certain systems do not cause great impacts but do break certain records, and sometimes those are included as well. This system, however, does not meet that criteria either. ~ 🌀HurricaneCovid🌀 21:08, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is funny. We were both typing talk page discussions at the same time. I put some references in the discussion below, so could we move the discussion down there? Lol. Elijahandskip (talk) 21:15, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I continued the discussion in the section below. ~ 🌀HurricaneCovid🌀 21:19, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Upper Michigan Winter Storm and US Cold Wave (October 17-20)

[edit]

Recently, there has been a disagreement between editors about the notability of the Upper Michigan “significant early season winter storm” (NWS words) and the recent cold wave, that made it all the way down to Florida setting record lows. “Super record lows” per Ryan Maue, the former chief of NOAA. I wanted to open this discussion so editors could figure out whether to include this or not. Elijahandskip (talk) 21:12, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • I Support including this in the article for two reasons. One, the record cold temperatures went across the entire central and eastern US. Two, the NWS was forecasting for 8-12 inches of snow with, what they called, a “significant early season winter storm” and the Weather Prediction Center confirmed 12-18 inches of snowfall was observed in places[1], meaning it was more than forecasted snowfall in what the NWS called a significant winter storm. While snow in Michigan is normal for this time of year, the fact NWS use the words “significant winter storm” means it should be included in the article. (Pinging HurricaneCovid, Cyclonetracker7586 and alerting an IP editor via talk page since they are involved in the disagreement or edited the page). Elijahandskip (talk) 21:12, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly Oppose – While what Elijahandskip has brought up is true, this system lacked notable, widespread impacts. Snow in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is nothing new and systems of similar magnitude to this one occur quite frequently and are not included in winter articles. Additionally, the aforementioned editor has failed to present a variety of reliable sources in support of their argument, and social media posts are not enough. The National Weather Service forecasting a "significant early season winter storm" in advance has little to no effect on the actual impacts from the system when it does occur. Also, a system slightly outperforming its snow forecast on its own is not a sufficient reason to include it; this occurs quite frequently as well. ~ 🌀HurricaneCovid🌀 21:18, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I’d like to note we seemed to have made a compromise on including it in the seasonal summary. 4.26.33.34 (talk) 21:34, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose – At first, I thought of adding the event to the article but what HurricaneCovid made me change my mind, he made a very good point. It is somewhat typical for winter storms to occur in the U.P. this time of year, also it wasn't that widespread say if it affected the whole Great Lakes or Midwest region with snow then it might've been more notable to include it, but it was just in that local area but don't get wrong Elijahandskip made a good point also with the record cold temperatures though, but I would have to mostly agree with HurricaneCovid with this one. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 22:55, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • New Information: NOAA NCEI called this an “early season winter storm” and confirms it did bring “record-breaking snowfall”. At this point, NOAA plans to fully document this down as a record-breaking winter storm, so we should really include it. Cyclonetracker7586 & HurricaneCovid, I would like your opinions about including this in the events section based on NCEI’s confirmations. Elijahandskip (talk) 18:20, 14 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm changing my opinion to Neutral now since now NOAA is planning to fully document this storm due to it being "record breaking" that could warrant for this storm to be added to the "Events" section, but at the same time it only affected a small region though (mainly just the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) doesn't seem too notable, unlike the Mid-November Blizzard which affected a bigger region (South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin), so I'm 50/50 about it, maybe if we add more sources I will probably be swayed to saying Support. Recent addition to “Events”

[edit]

There recently was an edit made by someone that included an addition to the “Events” section. This edit includes multiple typos and does not appear to be relevant to the topic of the article. BillyTheFridge2 (talk) 14:53, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I went ahead and removed the addition that El Cubano 153 did. El Cubano 153, feel free to discuss the notability of that system here, but for now, I removed it on notability grounds. Elijahandskip (talk) 15:00, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We don't use The Weather Channel's Winter Storm Naming system on Wikipedia

[edit]

@97.79.222.14 I took this to the talk page to tell you we do not use The Weather Channel's naming scheme on Wikipedia due to it being unofficial and NOAA which is the official weather and atmospheric administration doesn't recognize it. Even the Meteorological Service of Canada doesn't recognize it. I'm trying to avoid a possible edit war over this. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 21:38, 12 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relevancy of Seasonal Snowfall Map

[edit]

In previous years, articles usually have an image at the beginning of the article that shows the seasonal snowfall or another significant piece of information. I see that the image, last updated by me, was removed on 11/08/22. I Support bringing back the image, updated to the most recently available data. Mid-November winter storm

[edit]

Can someone PLEASE make a section for the mid-November storm around Buffalo??? It’s ridiculous we don’t have a section with all the stuff in Buffalo. I tried making a section and my window tab screwed me over. Now I have classes and won’t be able to make a section. 170.24.150.2 (talk) 12:17, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Season Effects

[edit]

Two winter storms are listed on events, but none are on season effects. We should add those storms to season effects. 97.79.222.14 (talk) 13:56, 20 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Winter Storm Diaz

[edit]

Article creation possible today? Storm is out there right now 2601:8C:417F:B80:9D46:E3E2:C908:3B1B (talk) 12:17, 13 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas cold snap?

[edit]

Most weather outlooks and the temperature anomaly patterns strongly hint a bitterly cold arctic cold snap to come. Record low temperatures are to be expected to be set. Only time will tell if it will actually happen. Please update this article if it does happen across the continental US. Williamwang363 (talk) 02:04, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Seasonal summary

[edit]

The seasonal summary box should be regularly updated when a new storm comes in. However, I've noticed that it has been neglected recently. 108.36.125.41 (talk) 21:51, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

November cold snap?

[edit]

I just realized that the section about the cold snap that happened in the month of November does not exist anywhere? Can someone update on that please? Williamwang363 (talk) 15:07, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

December cold wave/Arctic blast

[edit]

@Präziser: Do you think that December 2022 North American cold wave should be made into it's own page? I think this cold wave/arctic blast was pretty significant for it to have it's own page on that topic. Thanks, EagerBeaverPJ (talk) 00:51, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@EagerBeaverPJ: Late December 2022 North American winter storm already exists. --Präziser (talk) 12:40, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Winter Storm Iggy"

[edit]

Apparently there's been another Winter Storm named by the weather channel, and according to them it's managed to set some records and bring some places close to setting records. Would it be notable enough to include here? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:48, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Section for New England cold snap on February 4

[edit]

I’m not sure if it should have a section, but the coldest wind chill in the US seems quite notable, and records were broken as far as New Jersey. 47.19.209.230 (talk) 19:55, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Update maximum snowfall accumlication?

RSI have been released. Can we update this? I'd do it but it's difficult on mobile. Mvhcmaniac (talk) 04:06, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
