Requested Move

ş or sh?

With all due respect to the culture and traditions of the Turkmen, the name of the city in English in an English encyclopedia should be "Ashgabat," unless it should be transliterated some other way. How many English speakers know what ş means? I know it's "sh" in Turkish and suspect the same for Turkmen. This is more consistent with the majority of cases under Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(use_English)

In deference to Turkmen, please put a redirect at Aşgabat, but the article at Ashgabat.

Agree wholeheartedly. This is an English encyclopedia. And English language didn't have cedillas the last time I checked. Óðinn 22:20, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
agree, move to Anglicized name. Chris 06:24, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
Done. Kghusker 18:24, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
You can't move pages by copying and pasting; it destroys the edit history. Please try WP:RM instead. Khoikhoi 04:26, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
So moved. -- Beland 23:14, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
You still need, however, to include the Turkmen spelling somewhere in the lead paragraph, rather than removing it entirely as you've done. Chris 03:15, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Religion

The whole section is suggested to be removed altogether as it is anyway an exact copy of a part of Turkmenistan article. Moreover, I see no point whatsoever of having a separate "religion" entry for just a city (unless we are talking of some very exceptional cases like Jerusalem or Varanasi). Pronunciation in Turkmen?

Added "citation needed" to the pronunciation given as being the Turkmen pronunciation, since hundreds of sites give the TURKMEN (which is not the same as Turkish or Azeri or Russian) pronunciation as being with a "g" sound, rather than ʁ, and furthermore, the usage of ʁ as is given on this article clearly contradicts what is said in https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Turkmen/Alphabet MissionFix (talk) 18:56, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

You have already raised the issue at Help talk:IPA for Turkish, Azerbaijani and Turkmen. One of the main points of that help page is to provide a centralized discussion for language-specific transcription issues. Please contain the conversation to one place and do not tag every instance of problematic transcriptions with a citation request. — Ƶ§œš¹ [lɛts b̥iː pʰəˈlaɪˀt] 19:28, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Street Names

Just curious to know why User talk:Trappist the monk thinks citing my Gazetteer of Ashgabat Street Names on the OpenStreetMap wiki is an unreliable source of information. I lived in Ashgabat for 4-1/2 years, collected the information, and published it on the OSM wiki for any interested cartographers to use. Thanks for any feedback. Devil's City

I've been to Ashabat and it's really awful. It's a boring piss-poor hole during the day and a dangerous hell hole at night. I think that the article should incorporate what a nasty city this place is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.72.91.120 (talk) 14:18, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
