Question about ship references

[edit]

@Parsecboy - Sorry about the changes that I made. Regarding the manner in which the names of ships were shown I tried to research Wikipedia on the subject before I made the changes. I apparently didn't do a very good job. I see that you are an administrator and that you focus on naval history. Can you tell me what is the purpose of listing the names of ships in the format that you use, for example - Artigliere? Does it feed a database or something of the sort? If yes, can you direct me where I might learn more about the formatting and the justification? If no, can you tell me why you use it? Thank you VFF0347 (talk) 02:49, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, it's not a big deal - as I said in the edit summary, the editing guideline is at WP:REDLINK. The reason the articles are redlinked is because at some point, those articles will be created, and it's better to have the links already present in existing articles so you don't have to crawl articles after the fact. And from a practical standpoint, when you're in the process of building a new article, you can hit the "What links here" button and find other articles that already have material that discusses the topic in question. Here's an example: a couple of weeks ago, I was working on Italian corvette Amerigo Vespucci, it had already been linked for more than two years at this article and this one (the latter since 2015). That made it easy to add details to Amerigo Vespucci. Parsecboy (talk) 09:51, 6 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
