Name

[edit]

I've removed the section on the origin of the name in Gaelic as it doesn't make any sense in Irish. As a pointer to a possible origin, I found this article while looking up a village near my home town in Ireland also called Belcarra. That name is an anglicisation of Baile na Cora, meaning "Town of the Weir." I don't know if that name makes sense in relation to Belcarra in British Columbia, or if the solicitor in question was from Belcarra in Ireland (or County Mayo) and simply named it after there. --sony-youthpléigh 14:22, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Most likely where the solicitor was from, typical of colonial-era naming; there may have been fish weirs at this site, or clam gardens or whatever, operated by the Tsleil-waututh, but the solicitor would have been unaware of them (except insofar as any dispute with natives might have had something to do with his messing with them....).Skookum1 (talk) 22:30, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flag and Coat of Arm

[edit]

Please try to add flag and a coat of arm to the page. A pdf-incorporated verison can be viewed from the village's website.

Proposal to rename page

Proposed rename: Belcarra, British ColumbiaBelcarra

Belcarra currently redirects to Belcarra, British Columbia. There is no Belcarra (disambiguation) page; other uses of Belcarra in page names are either secondary to the community or used in composite names. As the place name is evidently unique and primary, it is proposed to simplify the page name per WP:CANSTYLE and WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. Dl2000 (talk) 03:16, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support; an internet search suggests that, despite restricting a query to non-BC occurrences of "Belcarra,", results are still strongly associated with this village. However, there is a Belcarra Technologies Corporation, which may be referred to simply as Belcarra, but it doesn't appear to be notable enough for an entry on Wikipedia, and probably shouldn't prevent the move anyway based on PRIMARYUSAGE and disambiguation policies.
