info about her daughter

[edit]

Someone seems determined to keep the information that one of Beryl Bainbridge's daughters is the actress Rudi Davies. However by having the info at end of the biog, I think it gave it too much prominence as the entry is about Beryl. I have moved the info to the part about her marriage and children as it seems more natural to put it there.

Birth date

[edit]

Until about 10 years ago, her birth was sometimes given as 1933.

I have changed her DOB to 1934 as given in the frontispiece of her novel Injury Time, 1991 Penguin edition, which I guess is more trustworthy than online sources...GrahamHardy (talk) 09:58, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In the programme Beryl's Last Year she says (to a Liverpool taxi driver!) she was born in 1932. MilborneOne (talk) 22:29, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the same programme you see her 71st Birthday Party being filmed in November 2005 - given that the whole film is about her fear of dying at the age of 71 and is filmed in 2005/6 I think this comment to the taxi driver can be overlooked. The British council website also has here as born in 1934 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.142.4 (talk) 15:47, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Although from a primary source www.freebmd.org.uk has the birth of Beryl M Bainbridge in Liverpool being registered in the first quarter of 1933, which is consistent with a November 1932 birth date (parents had a number of weeks to register). No Beryl Bainbridge's registered in 1933 or 1934. The entry does have her mother's maiden name which agrees with the biography linked at [1] MilborneOne (talk) 18:30, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

4wight (talk) 08:02, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Although the programme "Beryl's Last Year" has a copyright date of 2005 it actually began shooting in 2003, so the comment to the taxi driver is factually correct. It is true that Bainbridge often put her DOB as 1934 but many people tell white lies about their age and she was no exception.4wight (talk) 08:02, 12 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Roman Catholic?

[edit]

The article "List of Converts to the [Roman] Catholic Church" includes Ms Bainbridge. But there is no mention of this in the article. Did she really convert? Ausseagull (talk) 07:27, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In the same theme I removed the Catholic writers cat as it is not sourced or mentioned in the article. It should be remeoved from the list as well unless a reference can be found. MilborneOne (talk) 12:04, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've queried it in the list of converts to the RC Church. Ausseagull (talk) 21:28, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Seedyman and the Bell Ringers

[edit]

I knew Beryl when I was a child in Liverpool. All the bios seem to miss her first writing for BBC Children's Hour which were a series of stories read by her (I think) about Seedy Man and his party of Bell Ringers eg visiting the seaside. Can anybody confirm this? This was around the time she went with Aaron her first born with Austin Davies to Santander in their old London taxi called "Leocardia".--Nick Green (talk) 19:03, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Lower Class

[edit]

In a BBC radio interview Mark Knopfler said that she possibly didn't get the Booker award because she was from lower class. The literature world was closed for her, he said. Is there any evidence for this and should this be mentioned in this lemma about her? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.86.100.237 (talk) 11:54, 25 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
