[edit]Press coverage of the 150th anniversary of the VC gives the name of this recipient as William Speakman-Pitts, can anyone shed any light on the discrepancy? David Underdown 12:09, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit]I think he has since remarried and decided to keep both surnames, it happened fairly recently [--Stedgyson 17:45, 16 July 2007 (UTC)]
Place of birth?
[edit]To people interested in Scottish regimental history, it would be relevant to know where Speakman was born. 81.154.15.60 (talk) 13:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Whoever subedited this made a basic error in sending him to Wellington School, which is a fee-pqying school in Shropshire (sorry - BERKSHIRE, and ususally refrred to as "Wellington", though properly "Wellington College") with a record for producing officers, which is natural for a school founded as the national memeorial for the Duke of Wellington. Speakman went to Wellington ROAD school in Timperley, Altrincham (in his day Cheshire, now Greater Manchester) which (after he left it) was known as a "secondary modern school" as it was when I was a schoolboy living just down the road from it. See the Guardian Obituary, currently online, if you Google "Speakman". Not completely clear how he, not being a Scot, came to volunteer for regular service in the Black Watch, but the British Army decides who you are and where you belong by a variety of principles which it keeps well under cover.Delahays (talk) 23:52, 10 May 2022 (UTC) Delahays (talk) 10:09, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- The link is to the former Secondary Modern in Timperley which I presume now is simply called Wellington School. If you think there is confusion then pipe the link so it appears as Wellington Road School. Nthep (talk) 09:07, 11 May 2022 (UTC) I think there is error, snd, as you say, presumption, not confusion. But conusion certainly does arise when we consider his membership of a Scots regiment - there is a "Wellington School" in Ayr which gives it a prime position in Google searches. All the same, thank youDelahays (talk) 10:09, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Delahays (talk) 10:13, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
