Expanding

I myself dont use a boline as i am a kitchen witch of sorts so i use my athame for both ritual and practical use, even so i realise this page needs work from someone that has experience with bolines. If possible could someone please do something about it? Grey witch 11:16, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Boline vs Burin?

Buckland, in Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft, describes a working pointed tool called a Burin, which he also calls a White-Handled Knife which he does not name. About:Alternative Religions does call it a Boline or Bolline and says it's use can be traced to Druid customs, and that in Welsh custom it is called a Kerfan.

Boline/Bolline

Not sure about the Bolline spelling! Never seen it used before, and Google only has 3 or 4 hits, which I suspect may be all downline from a single mis-spelling. Whereas I have never seen it spelled with a single "l," to my recollection. I'll have to do some research when I get home (if I have time--we have Circle tonight).

Interesting - try Googling both. You gets lots more Bolines. Just looked here and on the same page as Bolline they talk about the Wiccan 'Alter' and the Key of 'Soloman'....! Off to circle myself now, BB Kim Dent-Brown ^{(Talk to me)} 18:44, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

OK, don't get me started on the subject of spelling... {grin}

Googling "boline" does have more hits, but they appear to include listings for "bowline." The first listing for "boline" is Wikipedia's. The second is from altreligion.about.com, and starts off with "The Boline or Bolline.."

I really do think it's a legitimate variant of the spelling. I didn't change the page name, because I don't know which is the preferred spelling, and I'm perfectly happy to have it stay with "boline," but I do think we should include "bolline."

Google for boline+wicca gets 924.

I don't claim that Google is definitive, but I think I am on pretty firm ground here.

My own guess would be that Boline was the original spelling, assuming that the etymology derives from the Bolino of the Key of Solomon. But Septegram's point about the number of modern citations is well-made. Even if all those people are 'wrong', they still amount to an awful lot of usage!
