Photos

[edit]

The photo gallery added today does nothing to improve the article. The article does not mention the cemetery, the Junior high school or the post office, and frankly a picture that coincidentally shows a sign is not worth anything in illustrating an article. I am going to revert them all and suggest that the post office and the cemetery pictures only be added to illustrate something that is added to the article and the other two not be replaced at all, because frankly, they are pretty poor pictures. You removed my photos within a few minutes after I uploaded them. Not long ago there was a push by Wikipedia for people to take pictures of different towns. That is what I am doing in the part of Texas where I live. There was no requirement that the pictures be high quality, only that they show the places featured in the articles. Also, there has been a complaint that new contributors to Wikipedia have been discouraged by editors. I know the temptation to criticize because I am a longtime contributor to military history articles and I cringe sometimes when doing B-class reviews on articles that are in rough shape. Yet, I try to be encouraging and offer constructive criticism because I don't want to drive people away. The reason why there was no mention of the specific photos in the article is because I am currently in the process of updating the article. I just added the Geology section within the last few hours. Perhaps I should have used a uc tag. My photos may very well be poor as you wrote (but this depends on the viewer), but why don't you let them stand until someone can upload better ones. We are all amateurs here. A photo is better than no photo. Djmaschek (talk) 08:22, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If and when I add the photos back, I will make sure to add the related infomation to the article, as you suggested. Djmaschek (talk) 08:34, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The gallery is back in but the captions are improved and refer to material that is now in the article. The article itself has been greatly expanded in the last few days. Djmaschek (talk) 05:37, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, you have done a lot of work here. Article is looking good. Please remember this is a collaborative project. I am going to fix your citations so they can actually be verified. The citation style you used, while acceptable, is much more appropriate to a science or history article where most if not all of the citations are to books. Since most of the citations on a settlement article are web, a different style would be much more appropriate. Also, the fact that you referenced to personal observation needs to go. Personal knowledge is not an acceptable source for Wikipedia WP:OR. Generally, lists of businesses are considered unencyclopedic in a settlement article. I realize there isn't much else to write about in a small town (I live in a small town in Idaho), but perhaps you could rewrite it as a listing of largest employers? There are guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities/US Guideline on what should appear in articles on settlements. It is my personal feeling (a feeling shared by many others apparently) that our audience is best served when they are looking for information when they find a more or less standard way of presenting similar subjects. Hence some of the projects have developed what they feel is a good way of presenting the subjects they "oversee" and created a guideline for their presentation.
