Not sure if this qualifies, but there may well be grounds for a Usage in Popular Culture section here. I only know of one, a translation of one of the passages of this story was used as the words to the 'VNV Nation' song 'Chosen' from the album 'Praise The Fallen', but there may well be others as well. 211.28.223.137 12:33, 14 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tranlated

[edit]

This is the English Wikipedia, not the French one. I translated the title of the story into English. Nick Beeson (talk) 16:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi All,

I hope you don't mind me adding a link to http://www.tailoredtexts.com/read/boule-de-suif-maupassant-guy-de/#!/36926/en/d/0/0/0/ . Basically, it is a link to the original edition but with annotations in English designed to help people whose English is stronger than their French. The annotations are completely interactive and can also be added by any registered users. The site (and its interface) is geared completely towards people who are reading foreign-language literature. The whole short story has been annotated with more than 1,100 human-made notes.

Thank you,

error: wrong wife

[edit]

In section "Themes", 3rd paragraph, it is stated that "... the manufacturer's wife in particular is always shown to be shocked whenever her husband spends any money".

It is not the manufacturer's (Carré-Lamadon) wife but the wine merchant's (Loiseau) wife, who is the "spirit of order and artihmetic". She is later characterized as having "the soul of a gendarme".

(The wife of Carré-Lamadon is "much younger than her husband" and the "consolation of all the officers of good family quartered at Rouen", though later referd to, by madame Loiseau, as a "stuck-up little minx", while, for the sake of completeness, the Comtesse de bréville is "the daughter of a small shipowner in Nantes" and the story of her marriage to the comte "more or less of a mystery").
