WND

[edit]
  • WorldNetDaily has a very poor reputation for accuracy or fact-checking, so should not be used as a source except WP:ABOUTSELF. I had not noticed that the material was an explicit quote from a WND piece, so should probably have removed the entire quote instead of simply replacing the citation with a tag.
  • This is even more appropriate as it seems that the citation for the school response (itself a primary source) is both broken and non-recoverable.

I therefore am tagging both, and am proposing removing both unless better sourcing can be found. HrafnTalkStalk(P) 04:06, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The WND quote is about a WND source, as described in the article, and WND is the most appropriate source. The school statement is now referenced to the school and not to a link. Alansohn (talk) 04:58, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Quoting the WND has about the same reliability as quoting from a bathroom's graffiti, so is never an appropriate source about a third party. The school statement is unpublished and therefore does not allow WP:Verifiability. HrafnTalkStalk(P) 05:09, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Incidentally, WND is currently under discussion at WP:RSN -- general consensus is for wholesale removal. HrafnTalkStalk(P) 05:25, 5 January 2012 (UTC) )[reply]
In terms of the material being quoted, and given that it is being attributed to WND, WND itself would seem to be an appropriate and reliable source even if it isn't in others. Is there a genuine issue with the material being cited or is the issue one in general with any source attributed to WND? Alansohn (talk) 20:58, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Let's take this through step by step:

  1. The WND has "a poor reputation for checking the facts", "lack[s] meaningful editorial oversight" and is "widely considered by other sources to be extremist".
  2. This means that it is WP:NOTRELIABLE.
  3. This in turn means that it can only be used WP:ABOUTSELF and not for "claims about third parties". Please note that there is no 'quotation' exception to this rule.
  4. This means that material on the Burlington Township High School cannot be cited to WND. If the material in question is sourcable only to WND, then it should not be used at all.
  5. The fact that this material exists only on the WND website no more makes WND "an appropriate and reliable source" than the fact that a piece of graffiti exists only on a bathroom wall makes the wall an appropriate and reliable source for it. It simply means that no "reliable published source" exists for this material, and that it therefore is not WP:Verifiable.
  6. If the views of Scriptures In School had any prominence (and should be given any WP:WEIGHT whatsoever in the article) then they would have been published in a reliable source, not only in an extremist, WP:FRINGE, unreliable source like WND.
