did the magazine take advertisments?

- That's a good question. It doesn't seem likely. Though print advertising certainly existed, it seems like the magazine industry of the antebellum period wasn't a part of it, Burton's included. My guess is that, unlike today, the majority of their expenses were intentionally covered by subscriptions.
