Herbert Marcuse – OSS agent and revisionist New Left pioneer

[edit]

I'm not sure if Marcuse is being categorized as a "revisionist" in the sense that he was a historical revisionist or as per the pejorative, one often levelled by Marxist-Leninists or Maoists, "revisionist", i.e. someone who reinterprets Marx so as to placate the bourgeois. He did revise Marxist theory, but, in the way that this is just tacked on to the end of the article, it could be possible that the editor is just taking a dig at him, as well as the New Left in general. I wouldn't necessarily not characterize him as a historical revisionist, however.

There's a lot of operative rhetorical machinations involved with the charged, pejorative "revisionist", and, so, it's a bit difficult to explain what it is about this small heading the see also section, but I'm not entirely convinced that Marcuse is being cited in good faith as someone who was involved with American intelligence and the New Left, as it reads a bit to me like an insult peculiar to certain factions within the authoritarian Left.

I'm not going to edit what is stated, since they might not've been doing that, but I just wanted to open the floor to discussion about this. If Marcuse is going to be mentioned with an explanation as to who he is, then, I'm not entirely sure that it's necessary to say that he was a "revisionist", as, to my limited knowledge, at least, though he could be characterized as such, a critical reassessment of history wasn't, in the main, what his philosophy was about. 2600:4041:361:4900:285A:CDEE:58B8:AACB (talk) 02:06, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
