Steam sloop ?

[edit]

I very recently travelled on the Southport to Ft Fisher, NC, ferry which is part of the NC Ferry System...In the passenger lounge was an artist's print (by an artist named Martin) that had a description of the CSS Raleigh. This paragraph stated the Raleigh was a "ram". It also described the battle about the same as this Wikipedia article. This was what prompted me to look it up on Wiki - just curiosity.

I am no naval historian, but I do not believe (going only by what that print stated)that the CSS Raleigh would have been a "steam sloop". Unless, of course, the artists print paragraph is wrong...There was also a tender named CSS Raliegh that served the Merrimac (Virginia) in the Norfolk area I believe, which is unrelated to this one. It sounds like a "sloop" type vessel. Just wondering if anyone has addit'l info on Wilmington NC's particular CSS Raleigh. What kind of ship was it originally? It appears to be a custom built war vessel.
