West Lothian Question

[edit]

How can this be true?!

but rejected in a referendum by voters in November 2005

Silverhelm 00:42, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's not - typo for November 2004. City region stuff is kind of interesting. If you poke round odpm.gov.uk you can pull out reports, with the boundaries. Note to self: do this and put them here. It looks scarily like the Redcliffe-Maud Report's ideas. Morwen - Talk 14:05, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As well as the city regions in The Northern Way, at least one RDA includes it in their RES. It looks like an interesting view of development, but there are questions about whether it'll disadvantage rural areas. MrTrev 21:02, 3 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A.k.a. 'metropolitan area'

[edit]

(1) "The term city region has been in use since about 1950 by urbanists, economists and urban planners to mean not just the administrative area of a recognisable city or conurbation but also its hinterland that will often be far bigger."

(2) "a report released by the IPPR's Centre for Cities proposed the creation of four large city-regions based on Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Greater Manchester."

So Birmingham (for example) and some arbitrary hinterland constitutes an existing 'city region' entity in (1), but in (2) a 'city-region' is not an entity, but a proposal put forward by a think tank.

A useless article, sprinkled with dubious statements and apparent copyvio: http://www.yhub.org.uk/results.aspx?ht=The+City+Regions+in+Yorkshire+%26+the+Humber for example.

OECD studies

[edit]

"Also in 2006, the OECD published a number of studies on city regions, including an assessment profile of the Newcastle-Gateshead city region and a review of numerous city regions across the world [1]."

In the linked article, the term 'city region' doesn't appear even once.
