Origin of the name
[edit]Re: "Legend among the older locals is that a retired army captain named Clear Mountain when as part of a surveying team he stood at what is now the lookout at the top of the mountain and looked through his telescope to see the clock face of Brisbane Town Hall on a clear day."
It's a nice story but I don't think it can be true.
We know the name Clear Mountain was in use from at least 1903 when the Clear Mountain Provisional School opened. At that time, the current Brisbane City Hall with its clock tower had not been built. Instead there was the First Brisbane Town Hall. Now if you look closely at the pictures of that building, there is a small clock face over the Queen Street entrance. However, we know precisely where that building was (the building to the left still exists) and the clock is facing south-east, yet Clear Mountain is to the north-west so it seems difficult to see how any telescope could see the clock from Clear Mountain. Alas, like many Queensland places names, we don't know their origin, but it seems likely the good views from the mountain were the basis of the name and locals have embellished the story over the years. Traditional Owners
[edit]Hey community... I've not participated in contributing as my capacity is limited...
However, I would like to draw everyone's attention to correct protocol when discussing geographical locations on the Australian continent and ask that contributors include an initial reference to the Traditional Indigenous Owners and, if known, the original name of the location.
Eg: in this case, Clear Mountain is on the lands on the Turrbal peoples. People living in Clear Mountain receive mail to their address 123 xyz st, clear mountain, Turrbal, Qld, Australia.
This can slightly change geographically, depending on the remaining language and cultural knowledge. Eg, Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland, is on Jagera, Turrbal, Ugurapal, Quandamooka, Goenpul, Jinibarra and other traditional countries. If I'm talking about Brisbane CBD that geographic location is called Meanjin (mostly) but that depends again on where in the CBD.
As this protocol begins to gain traction nationally, it is helping to bring our shared history into mainstream awareness, which is essential for authentic relationships. 193.116.254.193 (talk) 01:17, 13 May 2022 (UTC)
