Except for fornication

[edit]

I suggest changing the passage about Chapter 10. It reads "... and no man may leave his lawful wife except, as the gospel provides, for fornication." Although it reflects the source cited, it seems highly implausible, because (to today's reader) its natural sense is that a man may only leave his lawful wife to fornicate as permitted by the gospel. I can't imagine the gospel encourages men to leave their wives to fornicate, and I can't read Bede's Latin to see what he says the synod ruled. What the synod might have agreed (if this is consistent with the gospel) is that no man may leave his lawful wife except, as the gospel provides, if she fornicates. Perhaps the expression "for fornication" would have been less ambiguous to the generation for which the translator wrote, or perhaps "for fornication" reflects an ambiguity in Bede. Could someone who is confident in their understanding of Bede's Latin check whether the "if she fornicates" reading is consistent with Bede? Thanks.
