Lack a source.

[edit]

This statement needs sources. "Groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and the Council of Conservative Citizens characterize themselves as culturally conservative." —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dunnbrian9 (talkcontribs) 08:28, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article has many issues, probably needs to be rewritten.

[edit]

First, there's only one reference, and it's of indeterminate quality. Most of the information here is uncited.

Second, this article is scant on information. The first sentence says, "Cultural conservatism is described as the preservation of the heritage of one nation, or of a shared culture that is not defined by national boundaries." Described by whom? However, that seems a reasonable enough definition, assuming it could be reliably cited. But then the article terms like the "culture wars" and social conservatism start getting thrown around without proper explanation. Then cultural conservatism gets linked to the Christian Right in America (reasonably enough, though it's obviously false to say that they've become synonymous)--again, with no sources. (And wouldn't indigenous groups and other minority advocates also be cultural conservatives by this article's standard?) Finally, in the "America" section, two individuals as are mentioned as "examples;" no context given. This section doesn't cite, plus it leaves dangling an unexplained connection to cultural relativism. Can we establish (with sources) that cultural relativism is at odds with cultural conservatism.

Third, everything could be better written. Some sentences need reworking and rewording, like the second and third in the intro. There are also too many instances of weasel words and bias. Examples: "...urgent sense of nationalism"; "Social change is generally regarded as suspect"; "...was a force of major political importance"; "...a conservative position in the culture wars".

I'd begin fixing all the small stuff, but I have the feeling that the whole article needs a rewrite--starting with a good list of sources. Elmsbye (talk) 00:14, 26 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

agreed. i will begin removing some of the tagged material and wait for others to opine.
