What are the many yellow pieces on the red outside walls of the building?

I wonder what the yellow elements on the building's outside walls mean ? They look like a regional form of bread ? dogshit ? decoration ? a cheerful reminder of the ornaments which can be found on Girona's cathedral main entrance doors ?
