Why "the" does not belong in English.

[edit]

The original sentence was:

It was founded as a merger between the three former political parties: The Movement, Citizens' Movement, and Liberal Party. [Emphasis added]

which was corrected to:

It was founded as a merger between three former political parties: The Movement, Citizens' Movement, and Liberal Party.

The "the" does not belong because of the colon which introduces the list. Using the in this case implies that there were only 3 political parties in the given situation (Icelandic government), or that the 3 parties had been previously introduced and were the only ones under consideration. Neither is the situation here.

This is where the parties are introduced so you give a numeric introduction, without the use of the article, and then list the parties after the colon. Nutster (talk) 13:23, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware. I had made a mistake and thought your edit had introduced the "the" rather than removed it. My apologies for the misunderstanding. --4idaho (talk) 12:44, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
