Change middle name Derico to Charles. Change birth year 1970 to 1969. 199.166.188.42 (talk) 17:53, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 18:24, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Middle name and birth date Facebook post 2024-10-24

[edit]

Devin’s middle name is Charles, not Derico. He was born in 1969, not 1970. He said this on his Facebook page. Please correct it. 162.194.19.187 (talk) 03:13, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. It looks like the wrong information was on the ASCAP website and someone copied it over to here. Someone might also want to advise Mr. Copeland to change the bio on his Facebook account, as it looks like it's copied from Wikipedia and includes the erroneous date. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 04:07, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you kidding? Preferring a primary source over independent, secondary, when you know that source disagrees with itself, while also agreeing with some of the info you just changed. Absolutely incredible. Good job. This is why people mock Wikipedia. *facepalm* Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 05:11, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A WP:ABOUTSELF source can absolutely be considered as good on DOB and full name. Compare WP:ALLMUSIC, which seems to have been the source of the DOB. Consider also WP:BLPKIND. But since sources differ, excluding both is fine. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:36, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It can also be argued that the sources that were used for DOB and full name failed "Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources". Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:03, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The ASCAP listing is not an independent source. It's a database of information submitted by involved parties. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 11:57, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the FB is obviously not independent either. So of the two [1][2] do we consider one more likely than the other to have got it wrong on his name? My view is that the FB is more likely to be correct. However, since he only posted on FB sort of "in defense", excluding both DOB and full name is fine with me too. But if we are including, I'd go with FB, it has the blue checkmark. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:03, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While the Facebook account is verified, the users of it it are not. Since the profile contains (still) a date-of-birth identical to that which is questioned by one of the accounts' own posts, we should consider the possibility of a hacking, misuse by an allowed user or even Copeland himself. Before relying on the Facebook data, we should at least expect the account to show the data it claims is correct itself first.
ASCAP have multiple listed songs showing the full name "Devin Derico Copeland" but also show, on one, "Devin C Copeland" imported through their Songview agreement from BMI.
Apple music has a recent DJ Muggs collab. with "Devin Derico Copeland" credit for a songwriter.
I completely accept a verified Facebook post as a good source, if it doesn't conflict with its own profile, find it hard to believe an organization responsible for accreditation would get an artist's name wrong, and would leave the date-of-birth and full name out of the article until a clear, unarguable conclusion is reached by the sources, not us. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 15:03, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't see that while the post says 1969, the start page says 1970. That doesn't help. Strengthens the case for not having a DOB, I think. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:11, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the exclusion of the DOB. I question if Allmusic is reliable enough for the DOB and I question even more whether inclusion on Allmusic is sufficiently widely published that it means we can override BLPPRIVACY concerns. And the Facebook post cannot be taken as evidence the subject doesn't care. In fact evidently they do care about that DOB. Whether it's because it's wrong or some other reason who knows, point is it needs to be widely published if we're going to use that date. And as for the Facebook post, if no reliable secondary source has given that date then I don't think it's sufficient. Nil Einne (talk) 09:49, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"find it hard to believe an organization responsible for accreditation would get an artist's name wrong" -- as I said, the material in the database has been submitted to ASCAP by music writers and publishers... and as a long-time professional in the (non-music) publishing business, I can tell you that publishers make mistakes. I have been credited on works I had nothing to do with. I myself have misspelled an author's name on the cover (back cover, in my case; I've seen worse from larger publishers.) I've known authors who found themselves getting royalties for works by authors of similar names. I see no sign that ASCAP verifies every piece of information put into their database (although they do have routes for corrections and updates.) -- Nat Gertler (talk) 16:27, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If there are conflicting sources the best option is to not choose between them. Either source could be wrong. Best to leave out the information. Travelmite (talk) 10:18, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Note: There appears to be another artist, known as "Derico", whose full name may be "Devin Derico Copeland", so that's not at all confusing the issue. Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 15:07, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Newer image

[edit]

In case Devin the Dude or someone who knows him reads this, and wants to "donate" a newer image, there are instructions at WP:A picture of you. Otoh, the current pic is pretty good. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:24, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
