Bibliography?

[edit]

Dick Teresi seems to have written plenty of articles - just punch his name into a Google or Yahoo search. Two notable articles are one in the Atlantic which I wrote in this article, and now another in the New York Times Books section. Here is the link for the NY times article

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/06/05/books/high-concept-classics-a-quiz.html. That particular article he wrote with his wife Judith Hooper. The NY Times article is humorous, and I mention this because it is humorous in the same way that the book he co-wrote with Dr. Leon Lederman (The God Particle) is humorous. So now I am wondering, whose sense of humor came through in the book - Teresi's or Lederman's? Lederman is known for his wit. Apparently Teresi has a sense of humor as well. So I guess it is a collaborative wit.

The problem I am having is finding biographical facts about Dick Teresi. He has written a lot including some books. But I have so far not discovered many biographical facts. Ti-30X (talk) 03:41, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In line citations have been added to all works mentioned so far in the article Ti-30X (talk) 04:34, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

and TASTE COMMENTARY Wait a Minute "The One-Minute Manager" is a classic. Did the authors give credit where credit is due? http://www.opinionjournal.com/taste/?id=9500068

From NYTimes Books section Sunday, January 24, 1993 - Hungarians Think The Darnedest Things "In short, Leo Szilard was the Rodney Dangerfield of 20th-century physics, an et al. in the patent office of life. Did he deserve this fate?" http://www.nytimes.com/1993/01/24/books/hungarians-think-the-darnedest-things.html

Dick Teresi's latest book (I think) (It has been well recieved from what I can tell). Lost Discoveries : The Ancient Roots of Modern Science--from the Babylonians to the Maya (Hardcover) by Dick Teresi copyright 2002 Ti-30X (talk) 04:16, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The review of Lost Discoveries in Nature 298 (6 Dec 2002): 1895-6 is absolutely scathing. Near the beginning the reviewer says Teresi's "enthusiasms have led him to craft a misleading, indeed pernicious, account of those [nonwestern] cultures and their connections to the modern scientific enterprise." Specifying his particular failings, he notes: "Teresi falls back on two implicit arguments: a Whiggish one (which uses our current standards to judge the past) and a general put-down of Europe.... The author’s Whiggism leads him to see non-Western cultures, not in their own terms, but as 'mirroring,' 'presaging,' 'hinting at,' 'bearing out,' 'paving the way for,' 'evidencing nascent understandings of,' and 'being the forerunner of' today’s science. This malady is sometimes diagnosed as 'precursoritis,' and every graduate student knows that ... is not the way—certainly not the best way—to tell the story of what people have thought about nature in other historical contexts."
In sum, Teresi's work should be taken with caution. --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 19:22, 26 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Dick Teresi

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Dick Teresi requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Bibliography

[edit]

I have commenced a tidy-up of the Bibliography section using cite templates. Capitalization and punctuation follow standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, as much as Wikipedia templates allow it. ISBNs and other persistent identifiers, where available, are commented out, but still available for reference. This is a work in progress; feel free to continue.
