I changed nationality of Fontana from "Swiss" to "Swiss-born Italian." In the sixteenth century, in fact, Fontana would have been considered to be both Italian and a Swiss, as the Italian state had not yet been invented. It's clear, though, that his primary "national" identity would have been "Italian," despite his birthplace in Ticino.

Pompeii Discovery

Perhaps I am simply incorrect, but the article for Pompeii clearly indicates that Fontana was the first professional to unearth the destroyed city.
