I don't think this is a national park. It's not on the [list of national parks] and [the website] doesn't say it's a national park. AdinaBob 23:05, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like I was wrong. This is the first canadian national urban park. AdinaBob 06:11, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have any reference documenting that it's a national park? As it looks form its official webpage, it seems more like a private park. I've changed the IUCN classification to "V" for now.Qyd(talk)21:00, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

National urban park

[edit]

I think all references suggesting this park has anything to do with national parks or even protected areas need to be removed. It's owned by a crown corporation that reports to parliament to the Minister of Infrastructure (as opposed to the Minister of the Environment), and it has nothing to do with Parks Canada. According to the official site at http://www.pdp.ca/History.450.0.html, there's nothing to preserve or protect there, which I think also means it doesn't qualify for an IUCN classification. Right now it's called "Category VI: Managed Resource Protected Area" which is managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystems, however its policy is to enhance only the "urban ecosystem" (http://www.sustainabilityindicators.org/about/Meetings/TorontoMeeting/Tony%20Genco%20Sustainability%20Conf.pdf, pg. 11). IUCN is concerned with natural ecological preservation, and Downsview would more accurately be called "Recreational" in the Ontario Provincial Parks classification, which is outside of IUCN classification (see http://www.cabi-publishing.org/pdf/Books/0851995896/0851995896Ch1.pdf, pg. 20).

Does this check out? Sorry about all the references.

Iminaufo 22:16, 29 April 2006 (UTC) The sign at Downsview confirms that it is a national park. However due to the desire to develop the area this may have been changed (the government also had the old hanger buildings listed as heritage buildings, but has removed those designations to facilitate development).[reply]

The article reads like it was written by a Parks Canada PR person trying to sell the development. At a minimum the considerable community resistance to putting condos on park land needs to included here (as the person below points out). Also, the touted economic benefits are speculative and don't belong on wiki.

========= The Downsview Lands Community Voice Association ===========

This is all wrong! in a day and age when every country on this planet concerned over the environment, greenspace, polution, rest reas, play grounds, family, safe areas, etc etc here in Canada, in the province of Ontario in the city of Toronto we are about to lose a lot of land to short sighted money oriented and budget failing politicians. Do all politicians go to the same school? or do they fail to remember the words they said to the voters that put them there, including promises? When is a new breed of government going to stand up in this country and do something for the good of the people instead of themselves? it was never like this in the 70's and before. So here is an association that was formed in the early 1990s in the wake of the decommissioned land, thathas been watching the government activities without too much threat. Then in the early 2004 and 05 behind everyones' back, in the backrooms the agencies decide to develop the park without public consultation and other agencies involvement. The association regroups and in 2007 a new campaign is underway, under the guidence and strategy of the re-elected president that founded the Association in the early 1990, petition rallies, TV and radio coverage, newspaper coverage all to expose the wrong done tothe Canadian public, taxpayer and voter and hopefully to SAVE THE PARK. http://www.geocities.com/downsviewpark/

Major update (September 2014)

[edit]

I've done a fairly major update to the page, but I think a lot more needs to be done. Part of the issues with the article was that it appeared to have been written when the whole urban park thing was first announced. I've removed a lot of the predicted development for the park and added what actually happened in the past few years. A lot more references and rewriting needs to occur. There also was a ton of stuff in here that seemed very advertorial, so I've removed what I can so far. I might return again to do more work on this. mikeman67 (talk) 15:53, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sports Centre reads like an advertisement

[edit]

The half-paragraph "The Downsview Park Sports Centre is growing to become the leading centre of athletic excellence in the Greater Toronto Area as the development of the Downsview Park sustainable community progresses. Downsview Park continues to pursue its vision to become a nationally recognized centre for sporting excellence and participation." looks like an ad for Downsview. Could you rewrite this from a neutral perspective? ES108.217.190.154 (talk) 01:37, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
