Design elements
[edit]Is this effectively the same thing as Design elements and principles? It seems like this article is a subset of that larger article. Could someone more artistically inclined than me comment on that? -- Yekrats 12:54, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
- I don't agree with having this article merged with Design elements and principles, as the other article does not apply so much to 2D art as it does 3D. Although, that's just how I interpret it. Zenchi 13:04, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Seven Principles?
[edit]Aren't there seven principles? That's what I learned in art class. I suggest balance is added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.113.98.113 (talk) 17:47, 5 June 2008
- I suppose your talking about Art Principals, not Art Elements. "Artists work with and organise Art Elements to make their work." The Art Principals are Pattern, Balance, Contrast, Rhythm/Movement, Variety, Scale, and Composition. The Art Elements are what are listed on this page. 60.228.254.118 (talk) 11:56, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm no expert on art or on Wikipedia but shouldn't the premise of this page be based on references rather than "are commonly thought to be" or whatever it says? WikiAlto (talk) 00:40, 13 March 2018 (UTC) WikiAlto (talk) 00:40, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
Texture
[edit]I have removed "There are eighteen kinds of basic textures, actual, simulated and the invented texture (or Tactile(a sculpture) and visual(a 3D looking picture))." because I wasn't exactly sure what it meant by "18 kinds of texture" - surely texture is texture, i.e. only one? Vandalism
[edit]Some jerk changed the description (the one that appears under the title when you're searching) to read "these are the seven elements people use when they do sex" or something equally immature. However, when I try to edit the description, I am unable. Does anyone know how to fix this egregious problem? Lawrence Calablaster (talk) 20:44, 9 January 2016 (UTC)Filter out the word s*x. Vandalism is still up and has not been fixed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.21.102.52 (talk) 04:47, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Functions of the elements of art
[edit]What are the functions of the elements of art Donaldson1999 (talk) 06:08, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within an art piece to help the artist communicate.[1] The seven most common elements include line, shape, texture, form, space, color and value, with the additions of mark making, and materiality.[1][2] When analyzing these intentionally utilized elements, the viewer is guided towards a deeper understanding of the work

History?
[edit]Hope someone can add some information on the history of the concept of the 'seven elements'. Almost all sources online neglect to discuss history at all. A few point to an origin in Arthur Wesley Dow's 1899 book but it only has three elements. Where did the seven come from? I cannot actually find any more information about this which seems quite strange given how widespread the idea of seven elements is in education. I think if any more historical information is available it would be very valuable to have it in this article. 47.16.147.124 (talk) 19:17, 11 September 2022 (UTC)
