Controversy

[edit]

I removed unreferenced material that was a) placed in the wrong section and b) implied the pseudonym was okay.

In March 1997, Durack became the subject of controversy when she revealed through an article by art historian, Robert Smith, in the journal,Art Monthly that she had entered paintings into Aboriginal art exhibitions under the name Eddie Burrup. Despite the storm that followed the revelation of using the time-honoured device of a pseudonym, Elizabeth Durack continued to paint for Eddie Burrup until a few weeks before she died.

Especially time-honoured device bit needs contextualising. As pure pseudonym (ie, another Western name), it would be acceptable, but the problem arises from a white person appropriating an Aboriginal identity and in a sense impersonated an Aboriginal, putting "his" works into Aboriginal art exhibitions which have limiting criteria. Part of the story was that Burrup's art sold better than that under the name of Durack but all this needs good references and awareness of the complexities. (I've just re-entered some of the stuff without that claim but refs still needed.) Didn't, it's touchy. Julia Rossi (talk) 06:45, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge with Eddie Burrup

[edit]

Eddie Burrup is a pseudonym of Elizabeth Durack. Once duplicated entries regarding Durrack are removed removed, primary sources removed, and unsourced puffery is trimmed, the article would be 3 paragraphs covering an Overview, references on one side of the controversy, and references on the opposing side of the controversy. This can easily form a section within Elizabeth Durack rather than a separate article. Flat Out let's discuss it 14:26, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Eddie Burrup has had a significant overhaul. If anyone is interested please comment on whether this could be merged into Elizabeth Durack. Flat Out let's discuss it 04:48, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, go ahead and merge them. I see no reason to keep them separate when they are the same person. Erté, Lo Spagna, Giottino and a host of other painters already have both their real name and pseudonym on the same article, as should this person's. ComfyKem (talk) 14:40, 13 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done - merge complete and Burrup redirected to this article. Flat Out let's discuss it 11:01, 21 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
