Initial comments

[edit]

I made some small copyedits for style, a few wlinks, etc., but didn't find anything I couldn't immediately resolve myself. Please doublecheck me and feel free to revert anything you disagree with. Overall, this article is very strong and appears ripe for promotion. Well written, well sourced, and actually rather touching without breaking neutrality policies; the final quotation is an excellent touch. -- Khazar2 (talk) 13:01, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did a little searching to be sure no main aspects were missed. Everything important appears to be covered, but I saw a few interesting details second-hand (but peer-reviewed second-hand) here:
The Open Mind: Elmer Ernest Southard, 1876-1920. by Frederick P. Gay, Roscoe Pound. Review by: Norman Fenton. American Sociological Review, Vol. 4, No. 3 (Jun., 1939), pp. 450-451
Southard was a descendant of John Alden and Miles Standish, became the youngest full professor of Harvard to date, and was also appointed to the ethics faculty. Might be worth including. -- Khazar2PDtags (talk) 13:21, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1b. it complies with the Manual of Style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation.
2. Verifiable with no original research:
2a. it contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline.

3. Broad in its coverage:
3a. it addresses the main aspects of the topic. Reading a few rememberances and obituaries through JSTOR suggests that main aspects are indeed covered.
3b. it stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style).
4. Neutral: it represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each.
5. Stable: it does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute.
