"...She was not often seen at public engagements like Victoria Gowon because Murtala Muhammed decided that it was inappropriate for the spouses of military leaders to be in the public eye...". I thought she was the wife to Obasanjo, why does Muritala Mohammed perception on first lady determine how she is portrayed? HandsomeBoy (talk) 11:29, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @HandsomeBoy, My understanding is that Gowon combined his personal and official duties so his wife followed him on these engagements and was in the public eye. Murtala Muhammed came after Gowon and however felt that it was not proper for the First Lady to be in the public eye so his wife was not in the public eye and Obasanjo carried on the tradition. Thank you for the response. So it was within the prerogative for Obasanjo to either carry-on with Gowon or MM view on the office of the first lady, but he choose MM. I think it will be clearer if the article says something like: ...She was not often seen at public engagements like Victoria Gowon because Obasanjo decided to follow the belief of MM that it was inappropriate for the spouses of military leaders to be in the public eye.... She is answerable to OBJ, not MM. She was first lady because OBJ was HoS, not MM. That is my take though! HandsomeBoy (talk) 12:32, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The exact text says "His first wife, Oluremi, had largely been excluded from his public life head of state, in accordance with a decision taken when Murtala gained power in 1975 that it was inappropriate in a military regime for the leaders' wives to have the high-profile role that Gowon's wife had enjoyed. Obasanjo's marriage with Oluremi was in any case already breaking down." Can you help adjust? Princess of Ara(talk) 12:53, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Obasanjo is an ibo man who is trying to deny his indignation
