Not a British citizen?

[edit]

I appreciate the fix, Mattythewhite, concerning the Daily Express. I did some looking, and apparently more reliable outlets have picked up the story (links at the bottom of this comment). I wanted to get other people's opinions about what to do with this, though. Given that he does not appear to be a British citizen at all—that he has yet to complete the citizenship process, not just that he does not have a passport—it would follow that he is only a Portuguese footballer, as that is the only nation for which he is eligible to play internationally. I don't want to change the lede, though, as this story is new and the original source is/was questionable. @Anwegmann: Considering he has played internationally for a country other than that of his birth, and that has citizenship status hasn't been ascertained, I would say that nationality should be omitted from the opening sentence of the lead, as is standard practice in cases like this in football biographies.
Regarding the links you've cited, the Daily Mail has been depreceated and "its use as a reference is generally prohibited", per WP:DAILYMAIL, and there is no consensus as to the reliability of the Daily Mirror, per WP:DAILYMIRROR. As it is a tabloid publication, we should seek a better quality source, especially when we're talking about content on a WP:BLP. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:34, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
