Scouting

Far East Council is part of the Scouting WikiProject, an effort to build a comprehensive and detailed guide to Scouting and Guiding on the Wikipedia. This includes but is not limited to boy and girl organizations, WAGGGS and WOSM organizations as well as those not so affiliated, country and region-specific topics, and anything else related to Scouting. Spotty coverage.

I don't know what better title to give this. I was in Far East Council for two years as a scout back in the 1980s. I was always a little confused as to why Far East Council included the Philippines and Thailand when it did not include Hong Kong, which is close to the Far East Council Headquarters in Japan. This has gotten even wierder with the addition of Singapore without adding Malaysia.

Was the original basis for Far East Council *only* those countries where there were troops run by the US Military as part of the BSA presence in the area? This would seem to cover the six in question. (The US Military having had larger presences in Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines in the past than today). I don't think the BSA units in Singapore are US Military run.

Any ideas?

I think it has to do with how closely-allied a nation or political entity is. For instance, Indonesia is also part of the DSC. Because HK was someday to be taken over by the mainland Chinese, I think that is why it was left out.

I guess that's sort of close, because only a strong ally would have had a military presence. But I don't think HK beging taken over would have been an issue when the council was formed in the 1940s. I wonder if Vietnam was in FEC in the early 1950s... Naraht 08:36, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

merge

Should we consider merging Far East and Transatlantic Councils and Direct Service, as we are trying to integrate Girl Scout Councils into the state articles, perhaps "American Scouting overseas" or something? Chris 20:15, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
