Birth date

[edit]

The internets firmly believe that Felicia was born June 28th, 1979 ( http://www.google.com/search?q=felicia+day+born ). This fits with starting college at 16 in 1995, as seen in her cited college resume. Can anyone at least confirm that she was born in 1979? Bluej100 (talk) 17:21, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I Will link her very own written blog Entry from her B-Day 2008, I think that should be enough. Pink (talk) 19:20, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Good find! Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bluej100 (talkcontribs) 00:45, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm so sorry to be the jerk, but we still need a reliable source for the year. I'm comfortable with the subject's blog entry as a clear source for the day (great find!), but I do not see the year in there. We cannot source contested biographical information on a WP:BLP to IMDB, unfortunately (see the archives at WP:RS). We also cannot guess at it. I did a search a few days ago an did not easily find anything reliable, but I'm sure there's something out there. I'm usually just fine with tagging something as "cite needed", but this is a BLP issue, so I'm going to remove the date again. Let's agree on something here before re-adding it, please! Kuru (talk) 01:04, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Her LinkedIn resume ( http://www.linkedin.com/in/feliciaday ) lists her college education as 1995-2000, and her site's About page confims that she was 16 when she started college, so we have two cited sources pinning it down to 1979, assuming she started in the fall. Bluej100 (talk) 18:12, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Unless there's a specific, reliable source for that information, we cannot include it in a WP:BLP. We can't make assumptions. I'd be happy to use her personal linkedin profile to support the year she started college or any other explicitly stated data, but I do not see a year of birth there. Kuru (talk) 14:53, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, and besides - "she started college at the age of X in Y", is pure original research. Only reliable sources that actually states the year of birth can be used. Nymf hideliho! 14:57, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. WP:CALC says that "routine mathematical calculations, such as ... calculating a person's age" are perfectly fine. – PeeJay 20:29, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly. Given "June 28, 1979" it's a routine matehmatical calculation to get to an age of 31. Such is not the case illustrated above. Kuru (talk) 20:50, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In one of Felicia Day's own edits she called the June, 28, 1979 date "incorrect" [1] which casts a shadow of a doubt. --Musicbuff3643 (talk) 02:16, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Her IMDB page has her birth year as 1977. ~ Josh "Duff Man" (talk) 06:23, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Kuru, what reasonable source is there for 1979? ~ Josh "Duff Man" (talk) 22:34, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If you're not happy with the one on the page, remove it along with the date. It cannot be replaced with imdb, however - the reliability of that source is an old discussion on wikipedia. Kuru (talk) 22:51, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This LA Times article says Day is 34, which would make her born in 1977. --Weazie (talk) 20:18, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't IMBD count for anything? --Alakazam (talk) 13:44, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not for contested data on a WP:BLP, no. See WP:Citing IMDb.Kuru (talk) 19:33, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to me the LA Times is reliable enough to pin down a year, and the subject herself is reliable enough on her birthday to provide month and day. --joe deckertalk 18:46, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Correcting myself, I retract the note above. I hadn't read all the sections below, the problem of usually reliable sources giving different answers on this is serious. Nevermind.  :) --joe deckertalk 18:48, 10 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Date of birth is not correct

[edit]

I've updated her year of birth to the correct date of 1977, rather than 1979, citing U.S. Public Records Index 1950 to 1993, Volume 2 via link, I am not sure if this link is publicly accessible or not though. The previous citation for 1979 contained no link at all and was therefore not verifiable. 190.78.117.52 (talk) 17:33, 23 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ancestry.com is a paid website, and is not a suitable source. The information cannot be verified without handing over credit card information to a shady website. Troels Bjerre Sørensen (talk) 07:49, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Better to link to a paid website than a website that doesn't actually make mention of the facts it's trying to source. – PeeJay 20:47, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is not the paywall nature, it is the fact that ancestry.com is mostly user generated. It is doing a fine job of mucking up sooooooo much history from completely untrained users making completely inappropriate "connections" from primary sourcing they dont understand, and then more untrained users making completely inappropriate "connections" and claims based on the crap that the incompetents before them have incorrectly laid out as "fact". -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:17, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not bothered by the paid nature of the ancestry.com site. We can use paid sources; "Do not reject sources just because they are hard or costly to access." WP:SOURCEACCESS. If it's a reliable third-party secondary source, it's acceptable.
The issue is that while it's presumably reliable, it seems to be a primary source. It's a republication of US Public Records, a primary source. Concluding that this "Kathryn F Day" is the same individual as Felicia Day, the subject of this article, is original research, not something that we do as part of Wikipedia.
The previously cited source for the 1979 date was Gale's Biography in Context, which is clearly a secondary source, and would normally be considered reliable. I think it's the publisher that used to be primarily known as "Who's Who."
"The previous citation for 1979 contained no link at all and was therefore not verifiable" is a non-sequitur. First, Wikipedia is not limited to using Internet-accessible resources. There are these things called books, for example, that are perfectly fine resources. Do not confuse "online" with "verifiable". Again, from WP:SOURCEACCESS, a print source may be available only in university libraries or other offline places. Gale's online materials do require a subscription, but as mentioned above, that's not an impediment, even if it required payment. Furthermore, if you're associated with any of a number of institutions, you can get free access. My San Francisco Public Library card gives me access to Gale, and your public library may do so as well. I get free JSTOR access this way, too; certainly that does not disqualify JSTOR as a source.
However, when I added this source, as I noted, "Gale has let me down in the past." Specifically, I used Gale as a source in Grace Park (actress) for her birth name, and Park herself opened an OTRS ticket to correct it. So I'm not really wedded to Gale as a definitive source. Frankly, I am becoming concerned that Gale is exacerbating "citogenesis", as illustrated by this XKCD comic.
I think we should step back and keep in mind the basis for Wikipedia's Original Research policy; it's not only to make sure we get it right, but also to ensure that the information we publish is derived from information other reliable publishers have deemed worth publishing first. We're not supposed to be the authority on, for example, Felicia Day's date of birth. We're supposed to be reflecting what other reliable sources have said. If we're unable to find a reliable source on Day's date of birth, rather then engaging in our own research, I think we should just leave it out. A lot of articles outside Wikipedia have been written about Day. If none of them reliably report her date of birth, we have no business being the first ones to do so. TJRC (talk) 19:17, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the above, I'm going to delete the date of birth. We simply do not have reliable sources establishing the correct date, and our efforts are amounting to WP:OR. TJRC (talk) 01:05, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I found two sources to corroborate the 1979 year of birth, this 2013 UPenn article that lists her as age 34 and TVGuide.com. Both sources also say that Day started college at age 16. Arbor to SJ (talk) 05:02, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This Guardian article from 2008 reports Day's age as 28 (as of Dec. 22, 2008) implying a 1980 birth date, but still supporting TVGuide's 1979 YOB. This June 2009 article on TVWeek.com lists her age as 28, thus implying a 1980 or 1981 YOB. The most compelling proof I've found: a blog post on Day's official site celebrating her 30th birthday on June 28, 2009, as well as another entry from June 28, 2008. Arbor to SJ (talk) 06:27, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good catch. Self published sources can be used when the subject is saying something non-controversial about one's self. I think Day can be trusted to celebrate her own birthday on the correct date (unless she's intentionally pranking the entire world, which I wouldn't put past her). BusterD (talk) 15:37, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

She's probably lying about her age. It's not too uncommon. Writers are likely relying on her Wikipedia article or on Felicia Day herself. --Harizotoh9 (talk) 01:42, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Between the Guardian and the LA Times piece we probably have enough solid sourcing to state a birth year of circa 1979. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:17, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But then there is this LA Times article[2] which has her as 34 in September 2011, which would be a 1977 birthday.

Numerous sources (including her own book) report that she enrolled at UTexas at the age of 16. According to the University's searchable database (already cited in the article), she enrolled in the fall of 1994 and graduated "with highest honors" on December 19, 1998. 1994 - 16 = 1978. Further evidence in support of a 1978 date is a passage in her book where she relates having a breakdown in December 2006: I was twenty-eight years old [...] and if I didn't do something with my life RIGHT NOW, the totality of "Felicia Day" would add up to nothing. 2006 - 28 = 1978. DES (talk) 23:16, 19 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In light of the fact that the date of birth, or rather a date of birth, keeps getting added here, I'd like to amplify my comment above ("A lot of articles outside Wikipedia have been written about Day. If none of them reliably report her date of birth, we have no business being the first ones to do so."), re-couched in terms of Wikipedia policy: "Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object." WP:DOB. Neither of these is the case with respect to Day. As a matter of Wikipedia policy, not just the consensus of the editors here, the date of birth should not be added. TJRC (talk) 20:38, 30 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This new article says Day is presently 37 (and thus born in 1979), but for the reasons stated by TJRC, I reverted a recent edit. In addition, the reliability of this souce is questionable. --Weazie (talk) 07:53, 4 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date... again

[edit]

I removed the birth date again. I don't care what was said on that podcast, there are plenty of ostensibly reliable sources (including, as I pointed out earlier, her own autobiography) that support 1977 or 1978, so unless someone shows up with her birth certificate, we can only speculate. There is a blatant WP:BLP violation at her birthdate, including false citations: The resume cite gives her full name but NO birthdate. The Alabama cite gives only a year and no specific birthdate. We cannot make unsubstantiated claims with false citations, and with a living person’s biography, uncited personal-life claims must be removed. The only thing an RS source cites is her year — nothing else.—2604:2000:1382:C5DD:EC6E:F801:6375:C8D1 (talk) 05:10, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • What I think should be changed (format using {{textdiff}}): Under the "Television/web" subsection of the "Filmography and other works" section, we should add her "Voice" role as "Draven the Technonaut" in the "We Opened A 200 Year Old Time Capsule" episode of the "Rhett & Link’s Wonderhole" live-action series released in 2024 on YouTube.

Let me see if I can find a real third party source for this and then I can add it @ScholarlyCrow. If you have one as well, that would help. YouTube isn't really a reputable source. -- FeldBum (talk) 16:54, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think YouTube works as a primary source in this case; it is a web series broadcast on YouTube & the source is a direct link to the episode Day appears in (she is listed in credits in the video description). This isn't someone on YouTube giving a self-published review of the web series but simply the web series itself. Sariel Xilo (talk) 17:06, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think you're right. I couldn't find anything else anyway. I'll add it. I'm too strict sometimes. -- FeldBum (talk) 19:05, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! This article (like a lot of other actors articles) needs some help in sourcing the filmography section which is why I tagged it. A few months ago the Reliability project did a drive to tackle in-line citation needed tags which was really successful; I'm hoping in the future they'll do a drive focused more on sections which have been tagged as needing more sources. Sariel Xilo (talk) 19:13, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Feel free to loop me into projects like that if you're involved. I'll put it on my watchlist too. Thanks! --FeldBum (talk) 21:09, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
