Requested move

[edit]

I believe Free state should be a disambiguation page, as evinced by the definition given on free state (government) - perhaps that page can serve as a basis for the new disambiguation page. In any case, as someone has already pointed out previously, having this page at "free state" is silly when its only application is in a historical context from 100+ years ago, particularly when there are other, modern uses of the term. 2. We have Free state referring to non-slave states, Free State in South Africa, Free state (government) which itself links to several historical free states and also has the disambig of the Free State Project. With four different possible articles one could want with free state (and more if you include the historical free states of Ireland, Bavaria, etc) this needs to be a disambig page. In fact this should be a disambig based soley on the confusion between Free state and Free State. One capital letter? Come on. 141.211.172.204 20:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  4. The difference between Free state and Free State is only the capital "S" and small letter "s". This is likely to cause confusion. In fact, article names with a difference like this are usually redirected to one of the names. Joshua Chiew 12:47, 10 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  5. The state of Maryland's nickname "The Free State", is not related to Slavery, but rather, Prohibition. See: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/mdmanual/01glance/html/nickname.html
  6. This article should be renamed
  • [[Free state (US)]] (parentheses being the conventional Wikipedia marker for adjectives or nouns used as qualifiers)
  • the disambiguation article should be renamed plain [[Free state]]
  • the South African article should be renamed [[Free State, South Africa]] (commas being Wikipedia's convention for disambiguation of placenames), and so on. OK? Tacitus 10:51, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose

[edit]
  1. I think a better solution would just be to make Free state (disambiguation). Mangojuicetalk 04:26, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]

Although I agree this article should not be at this name, no discussion has really taken place and no consensus reached. Also, the alternative proposed by Mangojuice does not require moving. Therefore, I am removing this article from WP:RM. Thanks. --liquidGhoul 02:03, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Defining Free States

[edit]

An editor has attempted to rewrite history by amending a chart to make it appear as if there were more slave states in 1812 than there actually were. This of course would render the entire missouri Compromise moot since, acording to this editor, slave states were and remained a clear majority. The editor in question is perfectly free to make the valid point in the article that some free states had implemented gradual emancipation plans and some of these states had some slaves into the early 19th century -- playing games with a table is not the way to do this.
