This is in great shape, as expected. A few comments:
- Lead
- "German commerce raiders early in the war and was later"
- Good catch
- "been abandoned in the
in the"- Fixed
- Body
- suggest "led to further
outcrydemands to strengthen the fleet"- Works for me
- suggest "The visit of a German squadron of four ironclads to Italy compounded French concerns about a combined Italo-German fleet that would dramatically outnumber their own."
- Done
- "Superior Council" is a bit easter eggy (on face value I didn't know if it was political or naval), suggest Superior Naval Council instead
- I used Superior Council as that's how Ropp refers to it, but that seems fine as well
- move the link to cruiser up to first mention
- Good catch
- link protected cruiser
- Done
- the explanation of the positioning of the 164 mm guns needs expansion, on face value, it seems like there were only four rather than six
- Added
- you could put the gunshield armor in the infobox
- Good idea
- "in August 1914, Friant
had beenwas on station"- Done
- "Germany's former colony of Kamerun in western Africa" it wasn't a former colony until after the war, it was just occupied by the Allies at this stage
- Good point
- add the OCLC for Pave
- Done
- File:Chasseloup Laubat LOC 4a15950v.jpg lacks a date of publication needed for the PD-US tag
- The LoC page only gives us "c. 1907", but since the photo was part of a collection donated in 1949, I think that covers our bases
- I don't think so, as it needs publication before 1925 for that tag, and there is no evidence of that. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 00:56, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
- The tag only says "often because" of pre-1925 publication; there isn't a tag that I'm aware of that's more specific for situations like this. Parsecboy (talk) 10:12, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm going to ask Nikkimaria for an opinion on this, if she wouldn't mind. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 00:29, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- Is there a specific reason other than publication date that this is believed to be PD? There is a PD-Detroit template on Commons but it specifies that images in that collection published post-1925 may still be copyrighted. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:42, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- When one donates a photo to the LoC, do they not also turn over rights to the photo as well? LoC has the glass negatives, which in turn came from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 (and who probably acquired them after the DPC went bankrupt in 1924). And if not, who owns the copyright that originated with a company that went out of business in 1924? Parsecboy (talk) 11:40, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- It depends - it's possible that they would be orphan works, but in general LOC does not hold copyright on its collections. Nikkimaria (talk) 14:48, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- It is maddening how difficult it is to track down copyright status for old photos like this. But best to get rid of it, I guess. Thanks Nikki. Parsecboy (talk) 09:54, 30 August 2020 (UTC)
- I know, it shits me to tears at times. File:Prince George of Greece and Denmark arriving at Suda Bay cropped.JPG needs a UK PD tag as well as the US one. Then we are done I reckon. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- That one is hosted on en.wiki so all we need is the US tag. There is a credit on the uncropped version but the resolution isn't good enough for me to make it out. I wonder if it's worth poking around to see if anyone knows of an archive of that paper to see if I can find a better scan (which might allow us to move it to Commons if we can determine the status in the UK). - File:'Italia,' first class ironclad of the Italian Navy LCCN2003672917 cropped.jpg lacks author death information and publication info needed for the PD-old-70-1923 tag
- Removed - the image is credited to an E. Montesi of New York, so we don't need to consider other countries' terms
- I'm not sure how File:St Idelsbade (Saint-Idesbalde). Pièce de 100 de marine - Fonds Berthelé - 49Fi1270 (cropped).jpg meets the US part of the tag requiring publication before 1925
- This came up with another image from the same collection recently - the photo should technically be PD-US-1996, since the author died during the war, but the photos have been uploaded with some kind of template I don't think I should mess with.
- the tags on the other two are okish
- naval register is duplinked
- Removed
That's all I have. Placing on hold for the above to be addressed. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:26, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

- @Peacemaker67: Can we get an update before the contest closes?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:49, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry, time zones got the better of me. This one is a kick-start for September then. This article is well-written, verifiable using reliable sources, covers the subject well, is neutral and stable, contains no plagiarism, and is illustrated by acceptably licensed images with appropriate captions. Passing. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:34, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
