Maternal Care and Sibling Rivalry
[edit]Hello, I am taking a behavioral ecology class this Fall, and so for the next few months I will be editing and contributing to this article on Galapagos fur seals. Today I added to the "Reproduction" section, introducing topics such as maternal aggression, siblicide, and mother-pup recognition. Although I drastically changed the "Reproduction" section, I tried to incorporate most of the original information into a newly organized format. I apologize if I left out anything from the original article, and would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions!

Edits made for Behavioral Ecology course
[edit]The Wikipedia entry on the Galapagos fur seal talks a little bit about where their habitat and their average size both within species and compared to other seal species. The entry then goes into the breeding habits of the Galapagos fur seal, highlighting its long nursing period, the interaction between females and other pups, and how fur seal pups are particularly vulnerable to food resource fluctuations in the environment. It concludes with two sections on the fur seals eating habits and current conservation efforts. The article could go more in depth about research on sibling rivalry in Galapagos fur seal. It brushed the topic in the “Reproduction” section, but our textbook goes much more in depth on sibling rivalry as a result of poor food conditions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katheefwah (talk • contribs) 19:44, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
