Superwind

[edit]

This article to completely wrong in so many ways that it needs to be rewritten. The given source of most of this material relies / hinges on just one 1993 source.

  1. Title is superwind not superwinds.
  2. The winds are caused by during the Asymptopic Giant Branch (AGB) in stellar evolution where the slow collapse of the core by gravity (due the a fuel crisis) causes the tenuous outer layers to expand into a red giant. This creates winds that blow off into interstellar space. These are called superwinds which expand outwards at c. 5000 to 10000 km. per second. These change in rate overtime, whose mass loss increases until the core is exposed, wich for a short time, creates a planetary nebula. A good recent 'Review' reference is Suh, Kyung-Won : "Astrophysics of Dusty Stellar Winds from AGB Stars" [1][2]
  3. Galaxies with a higher number of AGB stars the average exhibit activity of superwinds.
  4. Galactic superwinds are a different catergory / subject than superwind, and should be perhaps be shown as different topics. Superwind only refers to the high velocity of the wind/outflow, but galactic superwinds are both high velocity and are hot.
  5. Galactic superwinds are not really common terminology, and the referenced article is dated 1993 and the only common ESO reference is 2010.

The currently title should be immediately changed to a singular 'superwind' NOT 'superwinds'.

List of most massive stars#Relevance of stellar evolution suggest this process is "degassing", which is not the formal astrophysical term. e.g. "It is likely that many have lost tens of solar masses of material in the process of degassing, or in sub-supernova and supernova impostor explosions." (fictional 'sub-supernova' is not either.) I've recently changed this.

Merger proposal

[edit]

Now that this article is discussing specifically Galactic superwinds, not superwinds associated with AGB stars, the content of it and the newly-created Galactic winds should probably be merged. Although Galactic wind seems to be the more popular term in recent years, there is more content here, and the article title ought really to be singular. I have left behind the stubbiest of stubs at superwind, but it really has nothing to do with this topic: maybe just a hatnote to avoid confusion. Lithopsian (talk) 20:18, 1 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Massive" superwind

[edit]

I wonder if the word "massive", as in "massive" superwind, is the right terminology. How about "strong" instead? Attic Salt (talk) 23:07, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Much more copyedit could be done. I was thinking that cherry-picking the best bits from here and Galactic winds would give a reasonable merged article. Lithopsian (talk) 14:08, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thank you. Attic Salt (talk) 14:28, 5 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
