Pig on the Wall Legend

[edit]

This legend is based on a picture postcard that was issued to commemorate the feat of Capt. Webb in swimming the channel. A photographer took pictures of the celebrations of this feat which took place in Lower Dawley (now part of Telford) where Webb came from. The postcard was a montage of a marching band, a sketch of Capt. Webb and a local character sitting on a wall with his pig. The postcard was subsequently reissued in a number of forms with words added and somehow got associated with Gornal. In local legend the person with the pig is 'Johnny Longstomach'. The nickname 'Longstomach' meant 'tall' in local parlance. Johnny Longstomach was a real Gornal person but definitely not the person in the photo.
