I've manufactured a date of birth for Harry. All the online sources give a date a year earlier, as do Hughes & Jackson, but that doesn't reconcile to the registration of the birth (under the name Henry and with his mother shown in Find My Past correctly as Crompton) in the first quarter of 1866 in Ashton, which is however quite compatible with a birth in late 1865 so he was born on Boxing day and registered the following year. That is quite consistent with his ages shown in the censuses from 1871 to 1891 and his application to join the Institute of Mechanical Engineers shown in Hughes and Jackson. In the 1901 census he appears to have lost a year, but he was about to marry a much younger woman so that is hardly surprising.
If I am mistaken, the family omitted to register his birth for a year and under reported his age in the census returns for the next twenty years. Optymystic (talk) 17:37, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Now confirmed correct date of birth as 26th December 1865 by purchasing a birth record from the General Register Office. I have attached this to a tree on Ancestry.com Optymystic (talk) 10:35, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
