GNIS coordinates
[edit]I was excited to see that someone added new information to the lake article, but when I went to other mapping sites off the coordinates given, they did not point to the lake. Whoever established the coordinates for the lake were a little off- the ones given originally point to a spot just off the Harvey Mountain road near the lake. It is not the first time a govenment entity has been wrong- I'm submitting something online so that they can correct their database. Monsieurdl mon talk-mon contribs 13:29, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- A copy of the corrected coordinate email:
- We have investigated and verified your suggested correction, and we have made the change to the entry in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the nation’s official geographic names repository. The corrected entry is now available at that website.
- By the way, as you will note, the official name is Harvey Lake (singular) with the plural form listed as a variant or other known, but unofficial reference. Even so, if the official name were plural, it would not be with the genitive apostrophe since this form is not allowed in the names of natural features plus reservoirs, canals, and channels.
- Thank you once again for your interest.
- For Lou Yost
- Manager GNIS
- Wonderful! Harvey's Lake has always been just that, however- books, atlases, local references, roads, all point to it as the name. Harvey Lake is the designation for the GNIS, despite that it is actually called Harvey's Lake locally. I'll change it now. Monsieurdl mon talk-mon contribs 15:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for fixing the coordinates (here and on GNIS). BTW for reservoirs, GNIS coordinates generally mark the dam rather than the center of the surface.
- As article titles in Wikipedia aren't necessarily the official names, the current title (Harvey's Lake (Vermont)) is ok, if "Harvey's Lake" is the commonly used name (or spelling of the name). I made links/redirects to make it possible to find it from any variant (Harvey Lake, Harveys Lake, Harvey's Lake). -- User:Docu
