Henry Abraham MD (talk) 16:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Henry David Abraham[reply]

Thanks Henry Abraham MD for requesting this change here instead of editing the article directly.
I don't see the need to add this to the external link section, however also don't see anything that really speaks against it. We do have WP:ELOFFICIAL suggesting it's acceptable to include an external link to a subject's website. Based on this I added the link as {{official website}}. Pinging Sdrqaz as they might have some reason to disagree with my decision. – NJD-DE (talk) 18:01, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help. I’m appreciative.
Henry David Abraham 18:58, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
Perhaps I was too harsh and was put off by the framing of the link as an explicit curriculum vitae instead of an official website. Thank you for notifying me, NJD-DE. Sdrqaz (talk) 21:36, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nobel Prize and IPPNW

[edit]

The IPPNW received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. I assume that this means all members of the organization at the time can claim to have received it. However, the source cited doesn't mention Dr. Abraham by name, and (unless I've overlooked something) we don't even have a source that says he was in IPPNW at the time. The claim should be removed from the article until it can be supported by sources (and even then, there are WP:SYNTH concerns if we have "he was in IPPNW" and "IPPNW received the Nobel Prize" separately). WPscatter t/c 18:53, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There was a C-Span ref that was deleted by another editor that made the claim. I am just going to paste the now deleted section here to discuss the problems.
The edit that deleted the C-Span ref "Fails to verify what it claims " as a reason for removing a cited source (C-Span) is something I have not heard of. Since when do refs have to verify what is claimed? [1]
==Nobel Prize work==
In 1985 Abraham was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize[1]as a member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), where the prize was awarded “for spreading authoritative information and by creating awareness of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war.” [2] TeeVeeed (talk) 12:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC) TeeVeeed (talk) 12:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

References

As best as I can understand, the organization won the Prize, not the individual members. The only people mentioned by name in that second ref were co-founders Bernhard Lown and Evgeny Chazov. David notMD (talk) 13:33, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is my understanding too but as this is a BLP article and we also have COI requests by the subject and the article is a little messy-looking I am trying to make some improvements. As a reader the subject and the subject's affiliations are pretty interesting to me so I am trying again to make some improvements here but running into some issues?TeeVeeed (talk) 13:39, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
At Teahouse, Abraham has mentioned that there are references identifying him as centrally active in the founding of the organization, if not officially named as a "co-founder." Those are the types of references needed to support mention. David notMD (talk) 13:41, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Right. And that citation was deleted as I already noted. https://www.c-span.org/person/?1012623/HenryDavidAbrahamMD "He is a Nobel Peace Prize co-recipient and author of a new book ,..."TeeVeeed (talk) 14:46, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to raise an issue with the reliability of that source. C-SPAN seems to be a reliable news network, but the web page that lists his Nobel status seems to just be an archive of people who have made appearances on the news network. He has appeared on C-SPAN one time, and his Nobel status was not mentioned in the newscast, and in fact it wasn't relevant to the IPPNW org at all.
That said, as a newer editor I'm not entirely familiar with how to scrutinize the reliability of a source, and I'm not sure how much digging into the source chain is appropriate. This just seems odd to me since the bio given on the C-SPAN website is unlike the one given in the newscast. WPscatter t/c 18:15, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Well it is related because the Noble Peace Prize was given to the International group with Abraham being involved as part of that group. The ref from C-Span was a video but also there is text on the right hand side with the material. But you are correct in wanting to see more evidence available and so far every fact seems to add-up even-if my sources do seem a little lazy there.TeeVeeed (talk) 21:52, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article improvements

[edit]

So after having everything that I added to the article deleted- out of caution adding some notes here for future improvements to the article and trying to rm the template at the top of article page? Trying to find a way to tie this in--> Physicians for Social Responsibility. As a BLP article with a COI editor as the subject here on the TP, is beneficial imo. TeeVeeed (talk) 14:42, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Education section and most of the Career section are without references. There is no reason to believe the information is false, but verification is required. David notMD (talk) 14:47, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So using the BLP's website?? Or what would you recommend here? Also-do we have any good infoboxes for this type of BLP article that you could recommend (I am thinking academic or author maybe?) Thank you! TeeVeeed (talk) 15:17, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:BLPSELFPUB - for claims like these, the subject's personal website is almost certainly not going to be reliable. WPscatter t/c 18:17, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from Teahouse [discussing this article-"] kindly see Lown, Bernard. Prescription for Survival, p. 184, Berrett-Koehler Publishers, San Francisco, 2008. Additional verification of my participation in the Nobel ceremony is on my website, HenryAbrahamMD.com, which includes a photo of the Americans involved in forming IPPNW (a much younger version of me is in the center holding the Peace medal),"

Also----does anyone have an easy way that we could use the correct permissions to upload an IMAGE to the commons for this? Thanks! TeeVeeed (talk) 15:01, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Okay so from the large print addition on page I find this: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Prescription_for_Survival/0st0BdS6uHgC?hl=en&gbpv=1&bsq=Henry%20Abraham and indeed "leadership" (pg 369) is granted to Dr Abraham on his contributions from the authors who accepted the Noble Peace Prize.TeeVeeed (talk) 15:33, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nice find! WPscatter t/c 19:05, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I thought so too! Thank youTeeVeeed (talk) 23:53, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The BLP's own website is not an acceptable source for confirming details in the Education or Career section. A profile at a site of employment would be better but not perfect. David notMD (talk) 15:42, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you--yes I am trying to not use the subject's website. The obvious solution is actually the template links and also it appears as-if he is credited as "HD Abraham" in some instances so there are multiple good citations and references. TeeVeeed (talk) 21:44, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, what a process. The general theme seems to be that more verification is needed, and Wiki consulting a website is not the way to go. Let me offer the citations I know about. Over 80 years I've been blessed by a long and varied career as a psychiatrist, writer, and activist, not the least of which is my nuclear war prevention work with Physicians for Social Responsibility leading up to the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, 1972-1985. Thank you Dr A. Yes as you have probably realized Wikipedia has some checks & balances to validate and reference our information to make it as encyclopedic as possible. References that do not have editorial oversight unfortunately can be gamed. If you have a photo or image that you would be willing to release to the project under the terms available [[2]] for this article I would be happy to add it. Dear TeeVeeed:
I confess to being a slow reviewer of changes made on Wiki's page describing aspects of my career. I am responding to your note to me on 10/20/22. I am happy to release a photograph of myself and the American team that participated in the awarding of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear war, though I will need your guidance about how to send you the actual photograph. A caption identifying the persons in it is as follows: American physicians from Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. From left to right: Thomas Chalmers, Professor of Medicine and developer of the randomized controlled clinical trial; Herbert Abrams, Professor and Chairman of Radiology at Harvard; an unidentified attendee; Edward Crispin, PSR, IPPNW activist in Canada; Victor Sidel, President of the American Public Health Association; Jennifer Leaning, ER physician and co-founder of PSR; Henry David Abraham holding the Nobel Peace Prize medal, with the Nobel Diploma on the table; Sidney Alexander, President of PSR; H. Jack Geiger, pioneer in social medicine and co-founder of PSR; Christine Cassel, member of PSR’s Board of Directors; Richard Steinman, President of PSR/Philadelphia; Richard Saxon, President of PSR/Los Angeles; and David Greer, Dean of the Brown University School of Medicine.
I give you permission to add it to the article as you see fit.
Best wishes,
