Requested move

The result of the proposal was move the page to Hidalgo (state), per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 02:34, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
Hidalgo (Mexico) → Hidalgo (state) — If the state isn't to get primary usage (see comments on Talk:Chihuahua (Mexico)), Hidalgo (Mexico) is potentially ambiguous with the various cities in Mexico called Hidalgo (in Coahuila, NL, Tamps...). Hidalgo (state) is clearer and more useful, and, I believe, in line with naming conventions. — Aille (talk) 14:00, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

- Support move to Hidalgo (state) as proposer. Aille (talk) 19:51, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- Rename to Hidalgo (Mexico state) to match convention established with Georgia (U.S. state). Vegaswikian (talk) 19:39, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- Georgia's a special case... U.S. state vs. Confederate state vs. independent state. A better, and more numerously populated, convention is given by Acre (state) and Salzburg (state), with Amazonas (Brazilian state) & Amazonas (Venezuelan state) when dabbing is needed.
- The proposed disambiguator "(Mexico state)" also re-opens the quasi-eternal Mexico state, State of Mexico, Mexico State, etc. can of worms: is this Hidalgo (Mexico state) a town in the Estado de México? The more grammatically accurate Hidalgo (Mexican state) would be the way to go, were it necessary; fortunately, no other country has a state called Hidalgo, so it isn't. Aille (talk) 19:51, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
- OK, there are some variations of state disambiguation. Better to use one that works in all cases. I would not oppose Hidalgo (Mexican state) if that is where consensus winds up. Also note the Victoria (Australia) was a recent rename effort for a state in a country. That is yet a third variation. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:38, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Rename to Hidalgo (state of Mexico), to avoid confusion between the cities, or gentlemen from Mexico who refer to themselves as Hidalgo. 70.55.203.112 (talk) 04:32, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- Similar comment as above: do you not think there's a danger of that title getting parsed as "the city of Hidalgo in the state of Mexico? Aille (talk) 04:40, 24 September 2008 (UTC)
- There's always Hidalgo (first level political and administrative subdivision of the United States of Mexico referred to as a "state") ? 70.55.203.112 (talk) 09:07, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- The town can be Hidalgo, Mexico, Mexico. 70.55.203.112 (talk) 09:14, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Fortunately, that was just a hypothetical: I don't think the EdoMex has a(n) Hidalgo -- they're probably sore at him for taking away such a large chunk of its territory to create his state. FWIW, convention seems to have settled on "Name, Mexico State" for towns and cities there, so should we find it does have a town called Hidalgo, the visually confusing but rhythmically pleasing Hidalgo, Mexico, Mexico, probably won't be necessary. Except as a redirect, maybe. Aille (talk) 14:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- Support move to Hidalgo (state), it is the most appropriate name, since it is about the state of Hidalgo, similar to the case of Georgia (U.S. state). Supaman89 (talk) 00:54, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
- Support per arguments above and at Talk:Chihuahua (Mexico). We have Tyrol (state), Bremen (state), Paraná (state) etc., and only take in the country when it's needed for disambiguation or at least to prevent confusion (Amazonas (Brazilian state) because there's Amazonas (Venezuelan state); Georgia (U.S. state) because there's Georgia (country), which is also a state; Punjab (India) because there's Punjab (Pakistan), which is not a state but could be mistaken for one). Victoria (Australia) seems to go against this and I don't think there's a good reason for that. -- Jao (talk) 15:11, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
- I have no problem with someone closing this to '(state)'. However this comment raises an interesting question. And that is why is Georgia (U.S. state) not at Georgia (state)? That would better seem to match the apparent consensus that you have pointed out and would dab in the same manner as Georgia (country). Vegaswikian (talk) 06:53, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- But as I said, Georgia (country) is also a state, namely a sovereign state. -- Jao (talk) 11:33, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

- Support move to Hidalgo (state), Hidalgo is a surname, a skilled gentleman, a Mexican state, the name of some settlements and who knows what else. JC 22:35, 29 September 2008 (PST)
Discussion
[edit]- Any additional comments:
- Hidalgo, Mexico - a dab page in the future?
- No incoming links at the moment, but other similar pages (Chihuahua, Mexico; Veracruz, Mexico; etc.) do get linked to. Redirecting Hidalgo, Mexico, to Hidalgo would take care of any potential redlinks and get incoming traffic within striking distance of where it wants to be. Aille (talk) 14:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- RD created. Aille (talk) 17:07, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
