Comment on "Juvenile confinement rates on steady decline" section
[edit]Link 24 does not work. The link directs you to a state policy webpage on the Pew Charitable Trusts website. The Pew Institute study discussed in the section is actually a press release announcing data on declining juvenile confinement.[1] The press release uses other sources such as peer-reviewed articles and government websites as evidence. It should be noted that the Pew is a non-governmental organization and not an academic publisher. Sarralaneamon (talk) 00:36, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
To add to that point the section on corrections expenditures, although well written and relavent to the subject and page, seems to be somewhat outdated with a 10 year gap between the last stated source and information on correction expenditures. --Kbortiz21 (talk) 02:25, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
The same could be said about the information on the number of youths in detention facilities which is last sourced in 2010. This revising of sources would be impactful in that it would help keep the the subject and importance of its content relevant and up to date. --Kbortiz21 (talk) 02:50, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
There seems to be a common theme amongst this article and that is the use of data that is outdated by over a decade. The statistics produced by the U.S. Department of Justice in the recidivism prevention section are dated back to 2006 and could be updated to more fluidly inform readers on more prevalent data and information that is both up to date and reliable.--Kbortiz21 (talk) 02:58, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Missing
[edit]The United States crime rate could be added. It is discussed that "[b]etween 1998 and 2010, prison populations in the United States rose dramatically." However, did crime also increase in relation? In addition, the U.S. incarceration rate could be compared to other developed countries to illustrate the problem of mass incarceration in the U.S.
There are more contributing factors such as longer prison sentences that should be addressed in the article. Sarralaneamon (talk) 02:47, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- I plan on making the additions above. Sarralaneamon (talk) 02:47, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
In the section regarding prison reformthere could be added sources or links that allow the reader to explore the varitey of options available for prison reform and in turn help move the article forward.--Kbortiz21 (talk) 03:05, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
The article overall maintains a neutral tone and mostly credible citations; however, there are gaps where citations have been left out and sections that need more explanation. For example, the section titled “Youth Justice” does not cite the source where the author attained this information. The section “Deferred Sentencing and Jail Diversion” does contain links to related Wikipedia article although it may also be helpful to cite how the list of diversionary measures was compiled to begin with. Additionally, the section Prison Reform either needs further explanation or could be left out of the article entirely. It does not provide details as to how prison reform is implemented and it takes away from the overall effectiveness of the article. This section also lacks proper citation which also weakens its effectiveness for this article’s content. Currycrisp (talk) 04:44, 9 November 2017 (UTC)Bergmanucsd (talk) 8:44 pm 8 November 2017
