C4 Documentary

[edit]

Contrary to the statement on the page, the Channel 4 documentary “The Welsh Great Escape” (2003) says that the prisoners escaped without any sort of paper-work or identity cards, etc. It also explains how the Germans came by their map of Wales: even though road signs and boards naming towns and stations had been taken down during war time, to hinder enemy troops should they arrive, the carriages on the train on which they were taken to the camp had maps on display, and the prisoners managed to copy one onto the tail of a shirt during the journey. The tunnel has also been re-opened, and was found to be still standing. The programme covered in some detail the problems within the camp amongst the Germans, who divided on who were pro- and who were anti- the Nazi party (an officer who didn’t send a card to Hitler on his birthday was beaten to death one night), and covered both the movements of the prisoners after they escaped, and the hunt by the authorities for them (including the murder of a local girl by an Allied soldier, which he initially sought to blame on the Germans, and for which he was later hanged). It is available to view on-line, if you are able to register fo the 4OD service (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-welsh-great-escape/4od). Jock123 (talk) 10:47, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
