He was named to the team
[edit]@Walter Görlitz: I made what I thought was an improvement to the wording but you reverted it, saying "He was named to the team, not in the team". What does that mean? I assume it's American English but what does it signify? The reference seems to be saying that he was named in an All-Time Canada XI selected by fans. Please explain the distinction.Deb (talk) 19:25, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- It's Canadian English, which in this case appears to have some similarity to American English. It signifies that the preposition is that he was name to the list that represents the team. In Canadian English, being named in the team does not make sense. Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:27, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- What does it mean then? In English English, you don't name someone to something; it's not a possible usage. Being named in a team, even though it's a virtual team, is. Deb (talk) 19:41, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Walter Görlitz:Suggestion: What if I put "He was included in the team selected by ... etc" Deb (talk) 19:43, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- Even more awkward. He was included on the team [list]. WP:LANGVAR and all. Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:45, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- I can't find a single example of "named to" anywhere and you haven't explained in what way being a member of a team is not the same as being "named in" the team, so I propose: "He was included in an All-Time Canada XI." Deb (talk) 19:48, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- Which preposition is used in https://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/candace-chapman-tomasz-radzinski-named-to-canada-soccer-hall-of-fame-1.4646732 ?
- Specifically about de Vos, "deVos was a member of the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning squad and was named to the Canada Soccer All-Time Canada XI in 2012". Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:55, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's interesting. I would still like to change it to make it clearer to English speakers all around the world. Deb (talk) 20:22, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
