The official name of Province of Santander is from 1833 after the Spanish provincial division of Javier Burgos to 1982 with the autonomy of Cantabria. Before and after the region had other names.

  1. 200aC-19 aC - Cantabria
  2. 19aC-???? ?????
  3. 714- Ducado de Cantabria
  4. 7??- Asturias de Santillana + Trasmiera + Liébana
  5. XII- Hermandad de las Cuatro Villas,Hermandad de las Marismas, + merindad de Asturias de santillana-Liebana + pernia-Castilla la vieja-Aguilar del Campoo
  6. XVI -popular y literary "La Montaña"
  7. XV With Catholic Kings - Corregimiento de las Cuatro Villas
  8. XVIII - Cantabrian o Cantabria to institutions, organizations and jurisdictions.
  9. 1727 - "Provincia de Nueve Valles" + el Partido y Bastón de las Cuatro Villas de la Costa
  10. 1778 - Provincia de Cantabria
  11. 1821 - Provincia de Santander.
  12. 1982 - Autonomous Community of Cantabria

I don´t know if Escandón give the name to the village in honour to the city of Santander or in honour to the Province of Santander or to the diocese of Santander. I suppose the first option. But anyway the official name of the province in that moment was Cantabria, and that´s the name which should appear in the article.

The information of the origin of the name is important, but should be mentioned in another way.

Good information — you did a lot of research. I'll make the change if you haven't already done it. I assumed he named Nuevo Santander after the province, because it is provincial size rather than city size. But it could have been the city. --Rbraunwa 22:31, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The official name of the province may have been one thing, but the region around the city of Santander was known as Santander in the larger region of Cantabria. And, yes, Escandón named a bunch of places in honor of his home region (and people too). See Tucker, Gene Rhea (Fall 2011). "Place-Names in Nuevo Santander: José de Escandón, Indians, and the Power of Names". Journal of South Texas. 24 (2): 4–23. He didn't name any places Cantabria, because he thought of himself as from Santander. TuckerResearch (talk) 03:50, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
