Knowsley / Knowsley Village

[edit]

This place name ought to be called Knowsley Village as this is the recognised name. The term Knowsley is more at use with the Metropolitan Borough (Council). Open to depate. Dmcm2008 (talk) 13:11, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Ordnance Survey and Office for National Statistics records it as "Knowsley". --Jza84 |  Talk  15:33, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Added map citation from Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council for the name Knowsley Village. Snowy 1973 (talk) 01:28, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The village is bracketed by 30mph signs on the main B-road that runs north-south, and with them the Highways Agency have seen fit to identify the location as 'Knowsley Village'.
The school website identifies itself as 'Knowsley Village - Primary School', and the school logo is a stylised KV.
The St John Fisher (Catholic) Primary School website places that school in Knowsley Village, not Knowsley village.
And Knowsley Council refers to Knowsley Village (again, note the capitalization of 'Village')

Split personality

[edit]

This article is trying to cover at least four things;

  • Knowsley Village, known as plain 'Knowsley' until 1974
  • Knowsley Parish - a much wider area
  • Knowsley Business Park - partly within the parish, partly without
  • not Knowsley Metropolitan Borough - clearly identifying that this is a wholly different entity

At the moment it is failing on several counts; for instance is it a large village with a population of over 11,000, or is that the total for the entire parish? I know the answer now, but only after doing further research. Editing is required, but I am currently embroiled in so many other projects, so if is left to me I don't know when it will happen.

I missed a fifth thing; Knowsley Hall. It is located nearby, which is notable, but is it really part of the village?
The 'History' section mentions Henry VII (the monarch, not the play), Shakespeare, and Capability Brown, stating that they all had connections to 'Knowsley', when their connection was specifically to Knowsley Hall, and is covered in that separate article. What next - somebody from Knowsley once shook the hand of a man who once shook the hand of John L. Sullivan? To be fair, the line about Edward Lear makes the Knowsley Hall connection clear, confirming that it has no place in this article either. Unless someone can prove that Lear took time out to visit the village Fish & Chip shop and wrote The Owl and the Pussy-Cat whilst consuming a portion of mushy peas.
It all needs to go, but if I am not careful with my editing, this article will disappear completely. Eek!

Population

[edit]

I am struggling to even start editing this article as it stands, because of issues such as what is the population?

  • In the header we are told "at the 2001 Census it had a population of 11,343"- but what is 'it'?
  • The Infobox is clearly titled Knowsley Village, and also quotes 11,343.

If 'it' refers to purely to Knowsley Village, then it would be in contention as one of the largest villages in England

However the header goes on to talk about the parish, including Knowsley Hall and Knowsley Safari Park. I don't expect either of the latter to contribute much in terms of population, unless you want to count the monkeys. Then in the header we learn that the parish also includes two additional suburban areas; Stockbridge Village and the northern fringe of Huyton. These are quite separate from Knowsley Village, and at this point I am wondering how I can possibly resolve this muddle.

Finding numbers for Knowsley Village itself is proving troublesome, so maybe I'm asking the wrong question? For a start, I keep getting redirected to Knowsley Borough, and population totals in excess of 155,000! However, the Prescot North (ward) (created in 2016) includes an area that at first glance approximates to Knowsley Parish, and at 9,519 has approximately the right numbers. There is a nice map of the ward at KnowsleyKnowledge.org.uk, but if you click on the thumbnail it gets replaced with a multitude of fancy graphics that tell us all about age and ethnic make-up, but doesn't give any clues as to what geographical area is actually included. Is this the sat-nav generation in full effect; just show me the bluddy map!

After some more digging I found a way to extract a map of the ward, and Prescot North includes two obvious areas of housing; Knowsley Village and (quel surprise!) Prescot (North). From this, and by virtue of pure guesswork, I would estimate the population of Knowsley Village to be closer to 4,000. But of course I cannot use that number in the article.

It does pose the question is this still a 'large village'? And does the original value of 11,343 for the whole parish (having the benefit of a citation to a reliable source) have any real value here? I shall return when my head stops spinning. TTFN.
