Disputed: Tom Thumbs Lagoon

[edit]

There is conflict over whether the name "Tom Thumbs Lagoon" refers/referred to:

  1. Lake Illawarra; or
  2. the mouth of Allan's Creek which has since been dredged to create the Port Kembla Inner Harbour (PKIH).

I have maps showing PKIH is correct. See also (for example) the following:

Can anyone reconcile this with the reference given supporting Lake Illawarra ? Was the name "Tom Thumbs Lagoon" originally applied to the Lake, and then moved ?? Grogan deYobbo (talk) 22:47, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Thumb's Lagoon is definitely separate to Lake Illawarra being what is now a small inlet about 5km north of lake ill see gmaps, there is also an article of someone drowning in 1877 trying to cross it here, mentioning that it used to reach as far as Coniston which is now nearly 2km NE of the inlet, it was also painted (circa 1840) by noted colonial artist Maurice Felton (yes i know Felton doesn't have a wikiarticle, i'm working on it:)), and it has a "Friends Of" as a part of the Illawarra Landcare Group so it could probably have its own wikiarticle. More Phys data

[edit]

More physical data would be good. Flushing time and salinity, to name but a few. These nearly closed estuaries are often less salty than the ocean. Rain and creeks provide the fresh water. Tidal inflows tend to penetrate under the lighter fresh water, so mixing is not overly vigorous.220.244.86.23 (talk) 09:10, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
