Article Class

[edit]

The page has grown quite a bit since the article class was assessed as "stub". I've changed the class to "start" and added a Wikiproject Physics quality control reviewing cheatsheet (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Physics/Quality_Control. --Charlesreid1 (talk) 08:41, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewing Cheatsheet

[edit]
The following highlights current issues. Feel free to either add the issues you've identified, or to strike them as they've been resolved.

WikiProject Physics' Reviewing Cheatsheet
Part of WikiProject Physics Quality Control

Do not remove the elements, but rather strike them as they becomes useless or irrelevant (i.e write <s>text to be struck</s>) to indicate that this element was verified and found to be all right.
If everything in one of the section (i.e everything in one hidden-box has been addressed), change the color of the section from "red" to "green".
This cheatsheet can be used by anyone.
To add the Reviewing Cheatsheet to an article's talk page, simply place {{subst:Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Quality Control/Reviewing Cheatsheet}} immediately before the first section.

Article content (DONE)

  • Add/Expand :
  • The following sections needs to be expanded/created :
  • I've added a lead paragraph describing filtering, which I see as critical to any explanation of LES. However, the lead paragraphs are longer than the "Details" paragraphs. The lead should be shortened to give a more succinct and encyclopedic definition of LES, and the details about computational cost and comparisons to RANS and DNS should be moved into a separate section (where it could also be given a more "proper" treatment). --Charlesreid1 (talk) 22:17, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Done. Added an additional paragraph to the lead describing why LES is used, and removed the existing paragraphs, which gave too many details about the relative costs of RANS, LES, and DNS, as well as the weaknesses of LES. This content will be moved elsewhere. --Charlesreid1 (talk) 09:56, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Update :
  • These sections or statements are out of date :
  • Modeling the Subgrid-Scale Stress Tensor - needs to be significantly expanded, as this is the "meat and potatoes" of LES research. Some common SGS models should be mentioned, if not defined. Sagaut (2006) contains a thorough listing of all SGS models, although it is a bit too thorough and not all of the models mentioned in Sagaut should be included on this page. The section should discuss both spatial and spectral models. Also, some mention of subgrid scalar modeling is needed. --Charlesreid1 (talk) 09:56, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Done.
  • Derivation - I don't see how this section contributes to an understanding of what LES is. Plus, it's not even for a general case - it's for a special case of Cartesian coordinates, incompressible flow, filters that commute with derivatives, homogeneous isotropic filter, etc etc. This derivation of the filtering operation applied to a PDE is best left to a reference. --Charlesreid1 (talk) 09:56, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Done.
  • Fourier (wave-number) space - there is no mention of the (very important) concept of Fourier space and how it is utilized in LES (e.g. what the filter operation looks like in Fourier space). I believe this would contribute significantly to the article, and would allow for a nice discussion of the turbulent kinetic energy spectra and what the different filtering operations do to the KE spectra. --Charlesreid1 (talk) 09:56, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
