Main Characters

[edit]

It does seem kinda weird now, with the supporting cast getting more write-up than the main cast.

I'm willing to (eventually) do the write-ups for Soma and Megumi, but I would have to ask someone else to do Erina's write-up. The main reason is that I don't think I can be objective with her character (if it's not apparent, I really dislike her personality as portrayed so far), so I want to ask for someone who could be more fair with her write up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.18.185.117 (talk) 02:55, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hisako Arato

[edit]

I haven't read the manga so I don't know what happened, but in the Hisako Arato section it states "She passes the Fall Classic Preliminaries with the highest score in her block, only after Alice." so was she highest or not? you cannot be highest and finish after Alice. As I haven't read it I wouldn't want to change it to saying she finished second, though that is how the sentence seems to play out, maybe someone familiar with the work could confirm and change if necessary90.212.62.57 (talk) 15:06, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It should just say that she finished second in her block. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:26, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clean-up

[edit]

This article has a lot of problems, the major one being it lacks references; the second big one is that it was apparently machine-translated and needs copy-editing. Tiredgamer (talk) 12:21, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

March 2016 copyedit

[edit]

I'm starting copyedit on the article, which will take me at least a couple days. I'd appreciate if others could hold off major edits until I'm done. I've read most of the tankobons so I don't expect to have too much trouble with the subject matter. – Reidgreg (talk) 01:19, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I've finished a second pass, here are my notes:

  • I've only read the manga to the point where the students arrive in Hokkaido. The roughest passages concerned what happens in the following chapters, particularly involving Joichiro's past, what caused him to leave the Academy, and the proposed team Shokugeki. I tried to smooth it out but can't be sure of the meaning – like whether the "plate world" refers to the world of competitive cooking or describes a fantasy segment. I tried to reduce it to something general enough to suit summary-style, though it may not be entirely accurate.
  • This article was about 18,000 words, which is almost double the maximum recommended by WP:LENGTH based on average reading speeds and concentration spans. I tried to be concise in phrasing, and removed redundancies (eg: when the siege of Polar Star dorm was summarized under that heading, it didn't need to be mentioned again for every resident; Subaru's tactics are listed under that character and don't have to be examined in detail under Soma and Takumi) and trivia (eg: individual dishes cooked, detailed match results).
  • I added some linking, particularly for cooking specialties.
  • MOS-compliance including:
    • Italics for foreign phrases and foreign terms not common in everyday non-specialized English. Anime and sake are common loanwords, but tsundere and donburi are not. Definitions should be included on first-occurrence when not clear from context.
    • No need for double quotes around proper nouns.
    • 'Tōtsuki Academy' is capitalized as a proper noun but 'academy student' is generic and lower case. Translations of the manga tend to be all-caps, making it difficult to tell what should be treated as a proper noun, but it's generally best to avoid overcapitalization.
    • Hyphenate compound modifiers, e.g.: first-year student.
  • The layout is a little problematic in terms of WP:ACCESSIBILITY and WP:LISTGAP.

I'm taking a break now but will return to try and work on this last point, and find a format that better adheres to the guidelines while maintaining the look and style. (BTW: there is a current discussion at MOS:TV about revising guidelines for cast lists.) If you have any questions or comments, please post them here. Thanks – Reidgreg (talk) 23:19, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Finished my final polish and removed three of four maintenance templates. The article could use more secondary-source information for real-world context and to establish notability. I'll keep this on my watchlist for a while, if there are any questions or comments. – Reidgreg (talk) 00:15, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive detail

[edit]

Jabunra, this article needs to be trimmed down. Please stop reverting it to the excessively long detail that you had there before.

  • Please refer to List of Naruto characters and List of Fairy Tail characters as references on how to structure character lists.
  • Do NOT list character nihongo in a separate line right under the section header. The nihongo can be placed in the first sentence.
  • The first sentence of the character description should describe who the person is. You don't need to say Soma is born and raised in the family restaurant. That's not what makes him important to the series. Actually, it was not said that he was physically born in the restaurant.
  • Do not add protagonist. It's clear from the story and the title who the protagonist is. WP:PROTAGONIST. Heroine is an interpretation so that should be removed unless the manga descriptions say so, which it doesn't. I've looked at the character profiles at the start of each volume; they don't use heroine or protagonist.
  • Do not add detail about Soma's father's past in Soma's description. He doesn't need details on who Soma's father defeated or progressed. Add that to Joichiro's description. Similarly do not add detail about Erina's family in Erina's description unless it affects Erina directly. Add that to Erina's father's or mother's description.
  • List characters in order of first major appearance in the manga. In other words, don't add Takumi until volume 4, or Alice until volume 5.
  • Add references to manga chapters and anime episodes.

Per Viz Media manga, use the following terms for the characters and schools:

    • Soma Yukihira - no macrons
    • Yukihira Family Restaurant
    • Joichiro Yukihira
    • Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute
    • Polaris Dormitory
    • Council of Ten Masters (anime: Council of Ten)
    • Shokugeki (anime: Food War)
    • Divine Tongue (anime: God's Tongue)

The sections need to be trimmed down more. Please remove any detail that could be placed in the plot summaries. We don't need to know play-by-play of Soma's, Erina's, Satoshi's, Takumi's, Azami's or Joichiro's shokugekis. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:32, 11 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Main characters, again

[edit]

Please provide evidence that Takumi and Hisako are main characters. The only ones that have been shown so far are Soma, Erina, and Megumi. See Volume 15 [1] and Volume 20 [2] and volume 24, the latest released English volume (June 5, 2018) [3] AngusWOOF (barksniff) 23:59, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removing redundant information

[edit]

There's too much information. So much so that this article is already a spoiler fest. This article is not the manga with every volume discussed. We only need the basic information about the characters, not a write-up on every single major event that the character in question is part of. I'll be cleaning up the article due to issues with Wikipedia's policies and will be removing information considered redundant. If anyone sees something removed that's truly needed in the article, I'll welcome a partial revert as long as it's reasonable. This is going to be my first major edit so I'll be listening to your opinions about this. Putting up an in-use template. TechnocraticCat (talk) 09:28, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Supporting characters

[edit]

As it looks like cleaning up the main character parts had a pretty good result, some supporting characters still have a lot of redundant information. Can someone help clean this up? TechnocraticCat (talk) 13:41, 10 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

TechnocraticCat, thanks for helping clean up the character information. I agree that if it's play-by-play actions or battle results, then that can be deleted and moved to the chapter/episode summary unless it is critical to the description of the character.
