Occasional characters section
[edit]If anyone knows the names of the people who played Mary the Paralegal, Natalie (one of Ted's ex-gfs), Todd and Valerie (the other couple), or any other characters who are named and are a significant part of only one episode, please include them in this list. do not include any of the girls Barney has had relations with unless they are key to the episode (like the girl who studied rain dances), or anyone who is not officially named. Thanks! Eldude611 02:02, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- also, what about Claudia? The one who had the wedding where Ted met Victoria. She and her husband have been is a couple episodes and have been mentioned a couple other times.Bradn87 (talk) 01:57, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Somebody needs to add Brad, since he's been in four episodes now.
Bilson should be added to this page too. He's been in five episodes now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.105.7.155 (talk) 00:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Perhaps Don the Duck, Robin's co-anchor needs to be added as well. 70.88.213.74 (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Any reason the occasional characters section isn't sorted? 188.221.160.143 (talk) 17:41, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
Why does this page...
[edit]...keep bringing up the issue of who is Jewish? If I'm reading this article correctly, none of the main characters are Jewish, so it should be irrelevant. --Metropolitan90 07:04, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
It's because Robin has a jewish sounding last name. Completely irrelevant since she is not jewish68.146.146.210 (talk) 00:28, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Vote to merge
[edit]This page is no more than a subset of How I Met Your Mother and should merge into that article. Kevin Forsyth 05:34, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
- I disagree. Merging this would make the main article cumbersome and ungainly. Think outside the box 14:02, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
- Agreed. Since no one else has responded in 5 months, I am going to remove the tag.--Cbradshaw (talk) 03:34, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
I disagree....common , how much can u stuff into one single article ? It would take an hour to load it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.194.96.15 (talk) 10:55, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
The Third section...
[edit]...has repeats of all the secondaries. Tsk tsk. Angelica K (talk) 01:48, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Character pages
[edit]What happened to the separate articles about the main characters? A member with username "Claritas" seems to have deleted 5 articles (for each main character) without any reason. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.24.81.225 (talk) 22:33, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I must add, these are the main characters of a successful tevelvision series. They DESERVE their own separate pages. This is utterly insipid, please fix it right away. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.167.76.54 (talk) 06:08, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
I agree. This unnecessary change condensed a full page's worth of information to a single paragraph. Why get rid of it? Someone, please restore the original pages. Chdprimary (talk) 04:43, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Wait for it, next someone will delete this page for not having enough references. Deleting is a lot easier than maintaining, and the deletionists chip away piece by piece, sucks since they took over. The lazy response would be to revert the redirects until this list of character page has better at least as many or better sources than the old pages. Working on http://how-i-met-your-mother.wikia.com/ instead might be less hassle. -- Horkana (talk) 18:38, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
Ted Mosby is the main character of a successful sitcom, and this deserves his own page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jbrhill (talk • contribs) 09:48, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- No, the criteria for a stand alone Wikipedia article are that there has been significant coverage of the topic by reliable third party sources. Active Banana (bananaphone 16:35, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
This was utter rubbish. They deserve their own pages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babar Suhail (talk • contribs) 14:51, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Vandalism
[edit]Somebody has vandalised the Ted Mosby character info. I tried reverting it, but it reverted to another wrong version. Can somebody set this straight - thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.241.69.194 (talk) 08:40, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Why?
[edit]Marshall and Lily need their own stinkin' pages! 216.204.206.155 (talk) 15:38, 20 December 2010 (UTC) agreed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.169.230.193 (talk) 10:56, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
- Not until someone (you perhaps?) can provide significant coverage in reliable third party sources. Or, You could start a fan wiki to accept non-encyclopedic content. Active Banana (bananaphone 16:33, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
- Try the How I Met Your Mother wiki in that case ([1]). — JediRogue (talk) 05:35, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
give me back Marshall and lily, or i will start using a different encyclopia website, like the How I met your Mother wiki —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.182.227.100 (talk) 07:44, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]There's a discussion here about merging the main characters of How I Met Your Mother into this article. Harry Blue5 (talk) 01:37, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Ted
[edit]Why is there so little information about Ted? --Babar Suhail (talk) 15:04, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Virgina Mosby
[edit]Ted's mother has appeared in a few episodes, I think she should be mentioned in Occasional Characters. --Babar Suhail (talk) 15:04, 19 April 2011 (UTC)
Merge again
[edit]On the Fictional characters WikiProject, we previously agreed to merge characters into this list. However they have been restored. Thus, another discussion's been started over at the project to merge these characters due to failing notability guidelines. Please keep all discussion centralised there, please. Harry Blue5 (talk • contribs) 07:59, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- They were restored on the grounds of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, in this case the fact the main character had an article. I don't see any reason not to just re-merge them.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 11:23, 22 May 2011 (UTC)
- I think Ted should have its own page, as is the protagonist.--85.60.191.59 (talk) 16:21, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Cast table
[edit]I gave the addition of the "recycled footage" some thought, and I don't think it is a useful addition to the table. Definitely should be mentioned and sourced in the prose, but the table is merely a visual of the when each character makes an appearance and which actor/actress portrays that character. I have seen many character tables on Wikipedia and none of them ever make mention of when recycled footage is used (LOTR for example comes to mind). IMO it serves to make the table more messy. --haha169 (talk) 18:33, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
The girl with the yellow umbrella
[edit]Having at long last seeing her after 8 years, I can appreciate the good intentions in adding a mugshot of her to her section. But considering it's the series' cliffhanger by excellence, and the series is called How I Met Your Mother, adding that, to me, is an unnecessary spoiler. Especially so when not even the main characters have mugshots.
So what I'll do is add said mugshot to her actress profile, so the picture won't go to waste, and if viewers want to see how she looks like, they can click on her article. I'm not very experienced with contributing yet, so I'm not really confident in that this decision is the best one. But I'll leave this talk here so that things can be sorted out eventually, alright. Have a good day everyone.

Why are Marshall/Lily's family members bizarrely omitted?
[edit]G'day! I've noticed this article seems to bizarely omit several significant characters in apparently ignoring Marshall + Lily's family members' roles in the show... I would venture to argue that many of them[Both Fathers[Mickey+Marvin] and Marshall's Mother] play more prominent roles than virtually all the Occaisional/Guests and several of the "Secondary Characters" so I am rather perplexed by their apparent out right omission from the article, considering Ted's rather insignificant sister[I'm pretty sure some of Marshall's brothers exceed her screen time, and they definitely exceed her episode count] is mentioned...
I've noticed this in the past too, and was too busy to comment, I had hoped the article was under repair, however it appears to be stuck, perhaps deteriorating...
The Character Grid also seems to be corrupted and contain nonsensical data such as the fact there is a portrayl listed for Marshall + Lily's unborn baby in the first few seasons... Which makes zero sense, as the character did not really exist then, and considering it is an infant it would be doubtable that they could precast the character... :P So hopefully someone can repair that if possible...
I'm currently pressed for time, so sorry if I am missing something, however we quickly checked the article and I thought it was crucial to call attention to these issues at this point, as the article has been in apparent disarray since early 2013, at least... With the final season of How I Met Your Mother underway I feel it is vitally beneficial to Wikipedia that this article be repaired, as with all due respect, it currently appears to be in shambles[or at least extremely cluttered and disorganized]...
So if anyone wants to start on repairing these issues, or explain to me why it is so if I happen to be overlooking any aspects of this issue that would be outstanding...
I can try and help providing there are no objections, however my net access is currently very limited so fee free to begin in my absence...
Thanks, I look forward to any reading any responses/clarifications whenever I am able too!
With all due respect, - Bliss 182 (talk) 04:30, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Since there has been no reaction to this, and I feel it's important, I decided to add the three most crucial characters I noticed were missing/omitted... I'm less than pleased with the current quality of their bios and aware it requires lots of additional work, work I encourage anyone able to to perform immediately, however I do not have the time and am far too tired. I noticed someone added Ted's father, who is far less significant than any of the three characters[Marvin Sr., Judy, and Mickey Aldrin] I added, which actually inspired me to act, despite lacking time to write and research a proper final cut of their bios. Please feel free to improve upon them pronto, however they definitely should remain. Current state is passable relative to existing article, and they are all far more important and prominent in the series than several others in the secondary section.
If someone can find their first appearances, that would be outstanding... I think Mickey Aldrin's is prolly Slapsgiving, and the Character Grid suggests Marvin Eriksen Sr. and Judy Eriksen first appear sometime in season one...
Thanks! Good luck, let's try and get this thing up to code... It's been flagged since 2010 and really should be in good repair as the series is in it's final season...
With all due respect, Bliss 182 (talk) 09:57, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
I started overhauling other areas of the article I know to be inaccurate as well. I am very much in favour of us tracking characters Episode counts and most recent/final appearances, however while I am watching the show, there are weeks I barely have time to catch it with work and whatnot, and I don't have time to transfer that data here as promptly as it really should be. I don't even have regular cpu access, I'm using a family member's laptop[not to over detail but they're fickle about whether or not they'll let me borrow it too] right now and doing this mostly because I feel rather passionate about it... So if anyone wants to step up and update to old format properly extraordinary! However in the mean time I think it has to stay the way it is, as I'm pretty sure it's unacceptable for Wikipedia to say that they last appeared in whichever episode if they have in fact appeared thrice since then...
With all due respect, Bliss 182 (talk) 10:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Fix
[edit]I think much of the article here warrants the OR tags and the writing is better off in the HIMYM Wiki. I believe the current version of List of recurring Entourage characters is a good template for converting this in a more out-of-universe model. I've started with the work and unless some anon or new account troll here raises a stink here, I intend to see this through. --Eaglestorm (talk) 16:53, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
The Mother's name
[edit]Is everyone sure her first name is "Tracy"? In the credits at the end of the finale, I could have sworn it appeared as "Trina". -- llywrch (talk) 07:16, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure it's "Tracy" (http://how-i-met-your-mother.wikia.com/wiki/The_Mother). Bilorv (talk) 19:05, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
- I just re-watched the episode. Both during the show, & in the credits at the end, her name is "Tracy". I was wrong. -- llywrch (talk) 06:34, 20 April 2014 (UTC)
"The Mother" or "the Mother"
[edit]Should it be "The Mother" or "the Mother"? Throughout the article and other Wikipedia articles, it uses "the Mother" (e.g. in Last Forever), but personally, I have always used "The Mother". Despite her having a real name (Tracy), for 207 episodes it was unknown and I've treated "The Mother" as a substitute for it, with proper noun status. I'm not the only one - the Wikia fan wiki uses "The Mother", too: http://how-i-met-your-mother.wikia.com/wiki/The_Mother. Bilorv (talk) 19:05, 13 April 2014 (UTC)
- Have I posted this in the right place? She has her own section here but would this be better placed at Talk:How I Met Your Mother? Bilorv (talk) 13:57, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
Secondary characters vs occasional and guest characters
[edit]What makes a character qualify for the secondary characters list? I can spot no connection between the characters listed as secondary and those listed as "occasional and guest" characters. I would suggest, if no hard rule has been imposed yet, one of the following:
- A significant appearance or plotline based around the character in at least X episodes (X being maybe 5 or 10)
- An appearance (including or not including flashbacks, voice heard, photos etc.) in at least X episodes (10?)
- A mention in at least X episodes (10?)
- A significant ongoing plotline - e.g. Ted dating Victoria, two episodes based around the Slutty Pumpkin (Naomi)
In addition, would it be better to split the list under "as themselves" to a separate section called "Guest characters"? Other characters could be moved there, such as Abby (Britney Spears) or Honey (Katy Perry), maybe with subsections of "as themselves" and "out of character".
Based on previous experience, I am not going to wait forever for a response. I will wait a maximum of a month and then boldly make the change myself - probably placing the cut-off point at 5 appearances. Bilorv (talk) 17:43, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
- WP:SILENCE - 11 days is long enough. I've made the cut-off point for "Secondary characters" 5 appearances. I've put a subsection under (the newly-named) "Other characters" for "Mentioned only" characters. I've put the guest stars in their own subsection, under "Other characters". Bilorv (talk) 12:57, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Narshall?
[edit]I know he is a little insignificant, as he in the fictitious movie, "The Wedding Bride 2", but it would be nice if we had a little information on him. I think he is seen in Season 9.Theasiandynasty (talk) 22:28, 12 October 2014 (UTC)
- Jed Mosley gets a brief mention, but I thought Narshall was just a bit too minor to be included. You don't get much more minor characters — Narshall is mentioned briefly in 2 episodes, but isn't really a character in his own right. He's just a rip off Marshall; "Swarley" doesn't get his own character profile. Bilorv (Talk)(Contribs) 15:16, 13 October 2014 (UTC)
